Welcome to Catch Up With Young Kim, my weekly e-newsletter to get you the latest on my work for you in Congress.
This week, I was in Congress working hard for you. Here are the highlights:

After putting myself through school and raising four children, I have seen as a student and as a parent how confusing the financial aid process can be.
I am excited to share that I introduced a bipartisan bill this week with Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (IL-08) to streamline and improve transparency of the financial aid process. The Understanding the True Cost of College Act would improve financial aid transparency by standardizing financial aid offer forms and establishing basic minimums of information that must be included on page one of financial aid offers such as cost of attendance, grant aid, the net amount a student is responsible for paying.
I will keep doing everything I can to make life more affordable for the Californians I represent.

New business is booming in Fullerton! Team Young was honored to join with the Brea Chamber of Commerce to help celebrate the grand opening of Kosha 5 Yoga Studio and owner Zarfeen Samani. As a Member of the House Small Business Committee, I am proud to stand in strong support of entrepreneurs in CA-39.

Today, I voted against H.R. 5376, a multi-trillion spending and tax hike plan over ten years.
According to the nonpartisan Tax Foundation, H.R. 5376 will cause California taxpayers to pay $14,095 in more taxes over the next 10 years, with a $755 annual tax increase for the average taxpayer in 2022 that increases to $1,923 by 2031. Additionally, according to the Congressional Budget Office, H.R. 5376 will add $367 billion to the debt over the next ten years.
I came to Congress to bring some commonsense to Washington, make life more affordable and expand opportunities so all Americans can achieve their dream like I did. Unfortunately, the House majority has been gridlocked for months over how many trillions worth of taxpayer dollars they can get through on a partisan basis, instead of pursuing policies that will improve our economy and lower costs on Americans.
Now that this reckless spending and tax hike plan has passed the House, I hope the Senate will listen to the American people and keep this bill from becoming law. Our nation’s future is at stake, and this plan puts our country on the wrong track.

The pain at the pump continues to be felt by communities across the nation but especially by those in CA-39. The average price of gas in California is now at an all-time high at $4.682, according to AAA. More inflation means higher prices and less buying power for workers. Our policies in Congress need to reverse these trends, not add to them.

I support the people of Cuba as they peacefully protest for freedom and basic human rights against their brutal, oppressive regime.
America is the land of opportunity, which is why my family came here from South Korea when I was a young girl. We must continue to stand for freedom.

I'm glad our community could come together for the annual Mayor's Prayer Breakfast in Buena Park. My team was pleased to connect with local city staff, elected leaders and public safety officials at the event. Faith and friendship continue to make our communities strong and resilient.

This week, I introduced two amendments I developed after hearing directly from firefighters and first responders at my October Wildfire Roundtable.
The amendments I offered to the National Wildland Fire Risk Reduction Program Act (H.R. 5781), aim to improve wildfire communications and address our meteorologist shortage. Both amendments were added to the bill, which passed out of the committee by voice vote. I will always support those on the frontlines of keeping our communities safe.

Fullerton Family YMCA’s Kid Zone has officially opened their planter garden! With this space, young YMCAOC members will cultivate fresh fruits and vegetables for community consumption—while learning about safe and healthy living.
My team was honored to attend the ribbon cutting. I'm grateful to our community partners such as the John H. Grace Foundation, Gigabit Now, Keith Roberts Troop 1201, Mercy Commons and O.C. United for coming together with YMCAOC to introduce this project and for the steadfast support of children's wellbeing in CA-39.

I was honored to meet with Victor Glover, a Flight Engineer for Expedition 64, a long duration mission aboard the International Space Station. While aboard the station, he completed scientific investigations, technology demonstrations, growing crops and taking hundreds of pictures of Earth. He completed 168 days in orbit and participated in four spacewalks.
As a member of the Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee, I’m proud to support STEM education opportunities, continued space innovation and the aerospace manufacturers from California’s 39th District who make the tools to take the U.S. to new frontiers.

Team Young was pleased to join the Walnut Valley Unified School District and community members for an official groundbreaking ceremony for a new science building and gymnasium at Suzanne Middle School.
The two-story building will feature ten state-of-the-art science classrooms and collaboration work spaces. The gym will include indoor bleachers, a full-size basketball court and two practice courts, a volleyball court and an attached Kinesiology workout room. I'm excited to see students at Suzanne Middle thrive at these new facilities coming in 2023!

My internship program provides students with an understanding of the core functions of a congressional office, including responding to constituent inquiries, researching legislation, developing public policy and observing the legislative process firsthand by attending committee meetings, hearings and a variety of lecture series.
I am excited to offer students the option to intern in one of my CA-39 district offices or in Washington, D.C. Please note: Spring applications close December 1!

I am committed to helping California's 39th District get through the COVID-19 pandemic better than before. As we reopen our communities and get people safely back to work, I will do all that I can to make sure my constituents receive the relief you deserve.
