Kōkua Luau

Excitement is mou nting as Arundel Lodge prepares for the 2016 Kōkua Luau  Fundraiser t o be held September 23, 2016, at Historic  London Town & Gardens. This event will feature authentic hula and fire knife dancing, an extravagant Hawaiian feast, "Com-Passion Fruit" and "Man-Go Help Your Neighbor" cocktails, island music, live and silent auctions, and loads of fun!

K ō kua is a Hawaiian word that means "to give help, aid or assistance: it signals a spirit of generosity." Update

"It's Like an Episode of HGTV!"

Back in November 2015, donors came together and helped us raise funds to make improvements and increase capacity in the Open Eye Gallery and Studio Art Program so that we could engage more clients and transform the studio into a beautiful, safe, space for creative chaos vs absolute chaos. We are happy to report that much of the work has been completed and persons served are being inspired by their newly upgraded environment. We invite you to stop by anytime and see for yourself the joy this space brings.  Thank you to all of the donors and volunteers who made this possible!

Did You Know...?

8 Reasons Racial and Ethnic Minorities Receive Less Mental Health Treatment.

While mental illness does not discriminate, our mental healthcare system does.  Less than half of all adults in the U.S. who experience a mental health disorder receive treatment, but individuals belonging to various racial and ethnic minority groups receive treatment at significantly lower rates than non-Hispanic whites, though the rate of need for services may not be that different. Here's why...Read more

Arundel Lodge FAQs

Arundel Lodge receives many recurring questions from community members wanting to know more about what we do, those we serve, and the programs and services we offer. We are pleased to provide the community with answers in this new section, "Arundel Lodge FAQs."

If you have questions, email them to I Have a Question and we will do our best to address them. You might even see your question answered in our newsletter!

Q : How is Arundel Lodge funded?

A: Arundel Lodge is funded in three ways:
  1. We receive reimbursement from Medical Assistance and a few private insurers for client direct care
  2. We apply to government and private foundation grants
  3. We rely on private donations
Government and foundation grants, along with private donations, are a vital component in closing the gap on direct care services not covered by Medical Assistance and private insurance, including specialized or 24hr care for some individuals, preparation of hot meals for Day Program participants, treatment for the uninsured or underinsured, and other needed support services. This funding also helps to cover operational expenses such as maintaining our building at 2600 Solomons Island Road where many of our services are provided and maintaining the homes in which 110 people in our Residential Rehabilitation Program live. Finally, these funds allow us to expand programs and services that address the community's needs, such as the development of the Marcus Youth and Family Center for children 4-17 years of age and their families, and the addition of First Step Recovery Program for substance use.

In the near future, we look forward to continue expanding services for children, substance use services, our Hispanic community members and our veterans.

Jessica Stallings, R.N.

Congratulations to Employee of the Quarter, Jessica Stallings, R.N. Jessica is Director of Arundel Lodge's Health Home Program and coordinates clients' behavioral and medical healthcare needs, helping to identify gaps.

When we asked Jessica why she chose to work in mental health, she said,
"I didn't choose mental health. Mental health chose me."

Before coming to Arundel Lodge Jessica worked at St. E lizabeth's Mental Hospital in D.C. and  in a  correctional facility on an as needed basis, "I saw how much could be done to help people set goals and reach their full potential." She came to Arundel Lodge, she says, because she liked the smaller business model, " I new that the people that I'd be working with are under-served and I wanted to help change that. In a hospital setting people are always coming and going. I like to spend time and learn about my patients and their families, not just view their medical records."

Most frustrating experience: "Coordinating care to get individuals' need met with medical providers who lack knowledge regarding mental health issues. Sometimes they can't see past the diagnosis of mental illness to get to know the person."

Most touching experience: "I coordinated care for a lady who was always worried that she wouldn't get into heaven when she died. I would spend a lot of time with her and calm her. I loved her, I really did. Then she passed away suddenly. It was very sad, but I was grateful that I was able to be with her in the months before she passed."

Volunteer Opportunities

Interested in Volunteering at Arundel Lodge? There is a spot just for you! Our current volunteer opportunities include:
  • Serve on a Committee or on our Board - help guide Arundel Lodge as we fulfill our mission and implement our strategic plan.
  • Computer Lab Volunteer - help the individuals we serve learn basic computer skills, such as setting up an email account, how to use Microsoft Word or resume building. Volunteers are needed for afternoon hours, from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm, Monday - Thursday.
  • Arundel Lodge Angels - join a group of people that care about mental health and care about the Lodge as they identify needs and perform service projects.
  • Art Room Volunteer - assist with art classes and projects Monday - Thursday, 9:30 am - 12:00 pm. You don't have to be an artist!
  • Tutoring Volunteer - help persons served who would like to take the GED test prepare and improve math, science and writing skills.
  • Event Volunteer - in the fall and winter, we do special projects with our clients. We collect and provide holiday gifts, run a toiletries drive/spa day, and collect hats, gloves and scarves for winter. Or volunteer to help out at our next Annual Fundraiser in September!
  • Painting Project Volunteer - there are also painting projects that we would love to have done, including some at our headquarters at 2600 Solomons Island Road and others in our many residential homes. If you're an artist and would like to paint a mural, we want to know about it!
Have another idea you want to share? Contact Cindy Garmoe, volunteer coordinator at 443-433-5906. Our volunteers are an integral part of what happens here, and we would love to include YOU!
