October Is National Estate Planning Awareness Month

No matter what point you are at in your adult life, estate planning can be a useful tool to ensure that the resources you leave behind support the people and causes that matter most to you.

Estate planning can help you:

  • Take care of your family members and loved ones.
  • Support organizations and causes that you believe in.
  • Shape the legacy you will leave behind.
  • Gain peace of mind, knowing that you have made important decisions in advance.

If you have not done so already, October is the perfect opportunity to consider how you’d like your assets to be distributed and to make the necessary preparations. You can learn more about estate planning here.

When you include The Arc-JCC&GC in your estate plan, you ensure that the resources you leave behind will be used to create opportunities for inclusion, defend civil rights, and change the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in our community. The Arc's Changemakers Society is an opportunity for our supporters to plan a future gift and leave a lasting legacy of social change for people with IDD. Learn more here

You Can Enter the Employment For All Big Idea Contest

Do you feel passionate about improving employment outcomes for people with disabilities—and know just how to do it? Submit your big idea to the Colorado Employment For All Partnership’s (EFAP) Big Idea Contest!

This year, the contest seeks ideas to gather and share employment resources in simple ways with people who have disabilities. If you have an idea that could help people with disabilities connect to employment resources, this contest is for you!

To enter, you will need to provide a quick explanation of your idea. You can use your phone or computer to record a short video of yourself explaining the idea, or type your idea into a brief document or slide deck.

In the last week of October, community members and EFAP members will vote on all submissions. Prize money will be awarded for the first, second, and third place idea—and winning ideas could be implemented by EFAP!

Have an idea that isn’t related to gathering and sharing employment resources, but is related to disability employment? You can submit your idea through this same process for a chance to win in the contest’s wildcard category.

Submission Deadline: Thursday, October 23

For more information on the contest’s submission guidelines, or to submit your idea, click here.

Free Guide: Prepare for Your Next Doctor's Appointment

Ensure your needs are met at every medical appointment! Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has created a guide about medical appointments specifically for people with disabilities.

In this guide, you will learn the following about medical appointments:

  • What are your rights? This includes things that providers cannot do, such as refuse to serve you or make you wait longer because of a disability.
  • What should you do if you experience difficulties? Difficulties could include unfair treatment or other issues.
  • What steps should you take before, during, and after your appointment to ensure all of your needs are met? For example, what questions should you ask the receptionist when you book your appointment?

Read the guide from CMS here.
