FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Happy May Day!

As you may know, May 1st is celebrated in many countries as a traditional springtime festival or as an international day honoring workers. In the spirit of this tradition, I would like to honor the “workers” of Midcoast Humane. The Midcoast Family is made of up of a lot of talent, some of whom are paid and others who give freely of their time to ensure our animals receive the best. As many of you know, it takes a village to care for the nearly 4,000 animals we serve a year. Our days are filled with countless late nights and early mornings, heavy lifting and gentle petting as well as brisk walking and slow steady cuddling of all of our animals. No easy task!

I am so thankful for all of the support, from both the paid and unpaid members of this family. We literally couldn't achieve our mission without everyone doing this together.

We are proud that our programming is focused on building up our volunteer led efforts - it's necessary for us to be able to offer innovative solutions to all of animals. And we are thankful we have the interest and the community skill sets to do it!

THANK YOU to all of our Midcoast Humane family members for walking our dogs, cuddling our cats, feeding our bunnies and greeting every adopter who enters our door. You are simply the best.

There is still time to register your camper for Animal Camp!

Animal Camp is a fun, educational camp experience for kids who love animals! Campers spend time each day interacting with shelter animals, hearing from shelter professionals, and taking part in fun activities that help animals and raise awareness about sheltering and other animal-related issues.

Week-long sessions begin July 8 for kids entering grades 1 - 6. Sign up the animal lover in your household for a week of fun, learning, and ANIMALS!
Animal Camp sells out every year, so sign up today!
With your help, we can continue to give our animals the medical and behavioral care they need.

We all know that one cannot put a value on the amount of attention and patience our volunteers and staff provide to every animal that comes through our doors. Their care and love addresses immediate, and often critical, needs. This kindness also makes a difference on the long-term quality of life for each animal. We couldn’t be more proud and honored to have this responsibility.

Aside from these soft costs, we do know that on average, our organization spends around $630 on every dog, and $460 on every cat, who is a local surrender or stray. These costs are high because unfortunately, many local animals arrive with medical and/or behavior needs that require special treatment, or have injuries that need immediate attention.

Thankfully, because of your support, we have had the resources to stabilize and treat every animal in our care. And together, we can continue to help every dog, cat, and small animal heal and prepare for their forever family.

In 2019, we will spend almost $150,000 on veterinary expenses. Will you help us ensure that we can meet these costs so that we can continue to focus on providing the love and care every animal deserves? Thank you in advance for your consideration. We are forever grateful.

We were invited for a special V.I.Pooches Meet & Greet with the band and their V.I.P. guests before the show, and the band is generously donating a portion of V.I.P. ticket sales to support the animals of Midcoast Humane. Vaccination Clinic with Louis Doe

This clinic is intended to serve animals who do not receive regular veterinary care as a part of their healthy living. Although all animals will receive a basic vet check for obvious health issues, this visit should not replace your relationship with your pet's veterinarian. It's vital to have a veterinarian relationship as they will be able to take the time to talk to you about your pet's health, including any behavior issues, nutrition questions, lifestyle and activities.

15-year-old volunteer Blake Austin recognized for her dedication!

Volunteer Blake Austin has donated countless hours to Midcoast Humane and supported us in every possible way. She's only 15 years old, but she's already in her 7th year of volunteering for us! Earlier this month WMTW's Steve Minich stopped by to meet Blake and profile all that she's done for Midcoast Huamne. In addition to volunteering, Blake has fostered over 100 cats, and personally found homes for many of them as an adoption ambassador. Last month, when U.S. Cellular's FUTURE OF GOOD presented her with a check to further her cause in the amount of $10,000 (she's one of their "16 under 16 " recipients), she thought to donate it to Midcoast Humane. Those funds will go a long way for shelter animals! We thank you, Blake, for all of your hard work for the animals and Midcoast Humane. You are a true friend and you make us proud!
GRAB A BEER... AND BRING YOUR OLD TOWELS
National Towel Day is May 25!

Working with lots of animals, you can imagine the messes they make and the number of towels needed to clean up those messes! That is why we are partnering with Island Dog Brewing for National Towel Day on Saturday, May 25. We will be at the brewery from 12pm to 4pm collecting your unwanted towels. Island Dog Brewing will also be selling commemorative beer glasses and will be donating a portion of sales to Midcoast Humane. Island Dog Brewing is located at 125 John Roberts Road in South Portland. See you there!
TOTES ADORBS: UPDATES FROM OUR FOREVER FAMILIES
Where Are They Now?
PEPPER LOVES A GOOD LAP
Pepper zooms around the house like a "crazy cat," but she always slows down to spend time with visitors. "She is very friendly and greets everyone who comes in the house. Henry, our grandson, was thrilled when Pepper came to him and sat on his lap. " The other place she loves to set up camp: the sink!
SHASHA... NO LONGER LEFT BEHIND!
One of our inaugural No Paw Left Behind animals found her forever home this weekend! We checked in with Shasha's new mom, who reported that she is doing GREAT and that Shasha could not be a more perfect fit for her and her lifestyle. She went on three walks her first day home, and does really well on leash. Her new mom bought her a lot of toys and a brush, which is Shasha's favorite thing! When her mom stops brushing her, Shasha will lay her head on her lap and put her paw over the brush (she doesn't want her to stop!). She has chosen the couch as her throne, and enjoys napping away.
NO PAW LEFT BEHIND: Help us get them home!
No Paw Left Behind  is a community initiative to help long-term, overlooked pets find their forever homes. Led by volunteers and staff at Midcoast Humane, the campaign ensures that every dog and cat who is ready to be adopted finds a family within 90 days. Help every animal find a home by following and sharing their stories on the No Paw Left Behind Facebook Page. Questions? Speak with an adoption counselor at (207) 449-1366. Cylene has been waiting for a home since January 20, 2018! This 3-year-old is one smart cookie, she knows sit, paw, and roll over...and is eager to learn more! She will know she’s forever home when she has a yard to run and fetch balls in. Her absolute favorite is to be tucked into her bed with a comfy blanket. She is food-motivated and guards her possessions (food, rawhides, toys), so it's important that her human companions be 16 years or older. No cats for this girl, though the right dog could work after a "meet and greet" at the shelter. She's a goofy fun-loving girl who is ready to be home at last!

Ashton has been waiting for a home since February 1, 2019! He is a gentle soul who develops the sweetest kitty friendships with cats in the room with him, but he is not quite sold on humans. He is looking for a calm home, preferably one with other outgoing kitties that will help him come out of his shell. A quick tip from our cat volunteers: even though Ashton prefers to observe people from afar rather than demonstrate affection toward them, he can't resist Purely Fancy Feast chicken treats. Come with those in hand and he'll come say hello! This handsome boy is just over 1 year old.
Goddard has been waiting for a home since February 16, 2018! He is a 14-year-old shorthair, a sweet older boy who loves comfy beds, a good snack, and ear scratches. He would do best in a home where he is the only cat. His adoption fee has been waived. He is being treated for a chronic hyperthyroid condition that will need lifelong medication and regular care with his veterinarian. Don't pass up this sweetie pie!
Fred has been waiting for a home since February 18, 2019! Fred is a handsome one-year-old Lab/Pit mix. You'll want to meet Mr. Fred outdoors where he's his true loving self! According to our dog volunteers and adoption counselors, Fred is a dream to leash up, he doesn't jump up, and he's very easy to walk. No tugging at all, he's just happy to walk in step by your side! Throw a tennis ball around or give him a tasty treat, and he'll be smitten. This photo was taken by one of Fred's favorite volunteers. Wouldn't you love to be on the receiving end of one of Fred's winsome gazes? Fred is ready to have a person of his own and leave kennel life behind. If you have other dogs at home, we'll schedule a "Meet and Greet" prior to adoption. Because of his energy level, we suggest an adult-only home or a home with older kids only (ages 13 and up).
