Note from Canon Heather+

We are just a week away – just a week! – from the start of the Lenten journey through the wildness and wilderness of stillness and purposed introspection. Here in the February Cathedral Life you will find all the details on how to more fully engage in the season and Come and See!

From a movie night to a guest preacher to a variety of formation and learning opportunities to our ongoing worship and ministry moments, join us in this Lenten journey! – and, if you are looking to really dig in and would like to volunteer, we have ministries that need your support. Learn the ins and outs of Altar Guild and ways of Hospitality – let me know if you want more information on getting involved. Your help is welcomed – and needed!

More than anything, my prayer is that this holy season is one of a new stepping out in faith for you and not a practiced repeat of Lents passed – may these weeks be filled with you meeting God anew each day: God’s mercies and grace, God’s presence and peace, God’s steadfast persistence and ever-steady call to love.

We are invited into it – marked for it – sealed in it –

may we truly claim it and permit it to claim us.

Please read all the many opportunities below and Come and See!

Aloha ke Akua,

As Ever,

Canon Heather+

For Lent, 1966 by Madeleine L’Engle

It is my Lent to break my Lent,

To eat when I would fast,

To know when slender strength is spent,

Take shelter from the blast

When I would run with wind and rain,

To sleep when I would watch.

It is my Lent to smile at pain

But not ignore its touch.

It is my Lent to listen well

When I would be alone,

To talk when I would rather dwell

In silence, turn from none

Who call on me, to try to see

That what is truly meant

Is not my choice. If Christ’s I’d be

It’s thus I’ll keep my Lent.

Organ Restoration Project Launch Details

Note from the Director of Music & Cathedral Organist

Dear St. Andrew’s Cathedral ʻohana,

As you may have seen in the Cathedral, exciting work has begun on our historic Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ! The Cathedral is fortunate to have Rosales Organ Builders restore our organ to better-than-new condition and provide a new four manual console. Rosales is considered one of the top builders today. Their work includes Trinity Church on Wall Street, St. James Cathedral in Seattle, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Portland, and the iconic Disney Concert Hall organ in Los Angeles. The current restoration project includes re-leathering the entire organ, replacing the switching electronics and wiring, and replacing two failed pneumatic shutter motors.

In January and February 2024, large portions of the organ are being removed and will be shipped to California for restoration by specialists. The system of pressurized air that allows wind to blow through the organ pipes relies on thousands of pieces of flexible leather in valves and reservoirs--most of the leather in our organ is over 60 years old, and long overdue for a replacement. Additionally, pipes will be removed and stored while electrical, lighting, and safety modifications are implemented.

Later in 2024, a completely new four-manual console will be built to replace our current outdated and malfunctioning console. The largest single portion of the project, the console will account for about 40% of the total project cost.

Then, in late 2024 and early 2025, restoration project work will include returning the organ portions that have been shipped to California for renovation, as well as revoicing of existing pipes. While this stage of the organ restoration work does not include new pipe stops, the new console and switching will accommodate future additions.

The total project cost is just under $800,000. A 10% deposit has been funded from the organ fund and general operations. A memorial gift is paying for the console portion, and the remaining 50% will need to be raised through grants and gifts from generous donors like you. The restoration project will take over a year, but the organ should be ready to serve another half-century before needing another renovation.

Please continue to watch this space for more information about the project and ways that you can get involved!

On Sunday, February 18th, the Reverend Anne Gardner will serve as our guest preacher at 10am, offering a reflection on her experience of walking the famed Camino de Santiago, a 500-mile path that extends across the width of northern Spain.

Gardner currently runs the chaplaincy program at Harvard-Westlake, a private independent high school located in Los Angeles. Prior to accepting this position, she spent twelve years as the Director of Spiritual and Religious Life at Phillips Academy, Andover. For many years Gardner has worked as a freelance writer, crafting pieces for various outlets including NPR, The Boston GlobeThe Providence Journal, and the National Catholic Reporter, among others. She has written a book about her extraordinary Camino journey, recently published by Adelaide Books (NY/Lisbon), titled And So I Walked. The book recounts both the challenges of completing a long-distance hike as well as the emotional and spiritual undercurrents her time on the trail revealed. As we launch the season of Lent on February 18 and our journey into the wilderness, join us as we welcome Reverend Gardner. Details on Stewards of Eden: What Scripture Says about the Environment and Why it Matters by Sandra Richter:

From Amazon An expert in ancient Israelite society and economy as well as biblical theology, [Richter] walks readers through passages familiar and not-so-familiar, showing how significant environmental theology is to the Bible's witness. She then calls Christians to apply that message to today's environmental concerns. Richter is a master Bible scholar. Each chapter draws out a biblical mandate about humanity's responsibility to care for the land, domestic and wild creatures, and people on the margins. She is also a master storyteller. Well-informed on present-day environmental challenges, Richter includes case studies that connect the biblical mandates to current issues.

A limited number of books will be available through the Cathedral Office for $15. Book is also available on Kindle (~$10) or through Amazon (~$20) : https://a.co/d/ggiZ3zY
