Alumni Spotlight: Lea (Perfetti) Sorgi '45

Lea C. (Perfetti) Sorgi '45
|
Cathedral would like to thank Lea C. Sorgi (Perfetti), class of 1945, who recently established the Peter and Lea C. Sorgi Scholarship Fund to provide financial support to Cathedral scholars. Lea and her two daughters, Claudia and Laura, came to visit the school this past month to meet with the four student scholars who received the Sorgi scholarship this past year.
Lea, a South End native, had a wonderful experience attending Cathedral all four years of her high school career. While at Cathedral she was involved in chorus, drama club, the senior play, yearbook, debate team, and much more. At the time, she aspired to be a telephone operator. Walking through the halls to see how much Cathedral changed over the years was remarkable and brought back many memories.
We are grateful for Lea’s continued investment in the Cathedral mission and our scholars. Thank you Lea for your kindness and generosity!

Drones Take Flight in CHS Lab
Students in our STEAM lab work collaboratively to build operational drones from robotics kits. This is part of a new curriculum that Cathedral has instituted called Project Lead the Way which introduces students to engineering, computer sciences and alike fields through project-based learning. Students learn a wide variety of topics including CAD modeling, 3D sculpting, coding techniques (e.g., Scratch, Arduino, Teachable Machine, Kobra), 3D printing and laser cutting technologies, website design (e.g. Wix and Wordpress), machine learning skills, and read about emerging technologies. A drone race is planned for later this semester.

Student Spotlight: Daylan Comas, '23
|
|
Comas on the Cello
The exceptionally talented Daylan Comas, Class of 2023, has been playing the cello as long as he can remember. He chose the grand string instrument to be independently different from his peers when he was in kindergarten and remains a student guided by his own unique artistic spirit. Daylan's face lights up when his bow graces the strings and his joy is palpable. Although he has never been west of Philadelphia, he aspires to play in a summer program for the LA Philharmonic and is currently working diligently on his audition piece. Like any true musician, Daylan reports being a lover of all music, he also plays ukelele and is most inspired by Yo Yo Ma and Bach.
Born in the US, Daylan has lived in Dorchester and the Dominican Republic. His family found the caring Catholic community Cathedral offered when he entered the 8th grade and he is grateful to attend a school that supports his love of music. Although his younger sister is only 3 she has already begun playing a string instrument as well. The two attend Boston String Academy and Daylan is taught by Michal Shein.
When asked what he'd do if he couldn't play the cello, Daylan shared that he is also passionate about science and would like to learn more about physics. For now, attending a music school and becoming a professional and accomplished cellist is his main goal. He remarked, "People always say life is short, but I think of it differently, life is too long to spend doing something you don't love day in and day out. When you find something that brings yourself and others joy and that you're truly happy doing, you should do it every day and pour your heart and soul in to it. That's how I feel when I play the cello." We wish this very driven young man a successful audition and know he has a bright future ahead!

Staff Spotlight: Derrick Beasley
|
|
We are excited to announce that our very own Coach Derrick Beasley was featured as a South End Spotlight!
Written and published by Melanie Olinto
Meet Derrick Beasley, the Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Cathedral High School.
An alumni of Salem State originally from Detroit, Coach Beasley joined the Cathedral family 3 years ago. He started his career in 1987 when he was drafted by the New England Patriots. I can imagine how much the students and athletes look up to him because of that singular fact, but there are so many more reasons to admire Coach Beasley. After leaving the Patriots, he went on to have a long career in law enforcement – specifically working one-on-one as a trainer and handler for police K9s. The thing he loved most about his career? Having a platform to connect with kids and spread a message of positivity, persistence and determination. Today, his main focus is making sure his student athletes finish the things they start. Outside of his professional endeavors, Derrick is a self-described ‘kid at heart,’ a dedicated family man who works alongside his wife to ensure his own kids achieve their dreams, and a potato chip aficionado!
More importantly, Derrick has a bold vision for how he wants to grow the Athletic Department at Cathedral. He hopes that by expanding their program and reach (in collaboration with the community, businesses and diverse local stakeholders), students and graduates will have bigger, better opportunities – both athletically and personally – once they leave Cathedral. To learn more about how you can support the Athletic Department, or to connect with Derrick Beasley, please reach out!
