I want to share with you the following press release that went out today. I’m delighted that after a long and thoughtful search, we can welcome Mario Alioto as our new Chief Executive Officer. Mario will take the helm on January 13, 2025, after which I will continue as Chair of the Board of Directors. I thought you, our supporters, would be interested to know that Mario is a long-time member of St. Isidore Catholic Church in Danville. He learned about the opening at Catholic Charities after his retirement and felt called to be of service.

Catholic Charities East Bay Appoints Former Giants Executive as Chief Executive Officer
Oakland, CA - Catholic Charities East Bay (Catholic Charities) announced today that the Board of Directors has selected former San Francisco Giants executive Mario Alioto as the new Chief Executive Officer of Catholic Charities. He succeeds Interim CEO and Chairman of the Board Jim Fiedler.
Mr. Fiedler remarked, “We are thrilled to have Mario as the new CEO of Catholic Charities. We have confidence that he will skillfully direct Catholic Charities as the primary Catholic charitable organization of the East Bay.”
Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ, Bishop of Oakland, added, “I was extremely pleased to hear of the Board’s decision. Mario Alioto will bring new ideas and energy as he leads Catholic Charities into a new and exciting phase.”
Catholic Charities provides key social services in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. Those services include Housing assistance, Immigration Legal Services, Mental Health and Violence Prevention, Disaster Emergency Services and Family Preservation. In his new role, Alioto will lead the effort to build upon the agency’s mission to support children, youth, families and seniors from crisis to stability to well-being.
Mr. Fiedler added, “The search committee conducted a thorough national search, relying on the services of Catholic Recruiter Associates. We are delighted with the outcome.”
Mr. Alioto, a graduate of St. Mary’s College of Moraga, recently completed a 40-year career in the front office of the San Francisco Giants where he held several positions over the span of his career. In his most recent role as Executive Vice President, Business Operations, Alioto was responsible for the organization’s revenue generation, marketing and advertising, retail and broadcasting areas. He also served for many years on the Giants Community Fund Board.
“I am excited to apply my experience and entrepreneurial approach to Catholic Charities East Bay. For decades, the agency has been providing invaluable services to those in need in Alameda and Contra Costa counties, and I look forward to working with the Catholic Charities team to build upon that important work and ultimately serve more people in our community,” Alioto said.
Alioto will begin his new role on January 13, 2025.
Catholic Charities History:
Catholic Charities East Bay, aids and assists vulnerable communities within Alameda and Contra Costa counties, which are situated in the East Bay Area of Northern California. Catholic Charities operations started in Northern California in 1935 when 36 Catholic Aid agencies in the Bay Area consolidated to form a newly affiliated Catholic Charities serving the poor and marginalized during the Great Depression. It formally established itself as a separate charitable organization in the East Bay in 1979.
