TOGETHER
SERVING SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

Welcome to our first edition of our quarterly Employee News! I hope this newsletter will foster better communication among the staff of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Venice, Inc. I invite you to participate in the content of the Employee News by submitting relevant information, photos, and responses. The more we know about what is happening within our organization the better we will serve our clients. This is an opportunity to share ideas, concerns, and congratulations among ourselves and get a chance to be more acquainted with each other. I look forward to reading about all the great things that are happening within Catholic Charities.

God Bless,

Our Mother's House in Venice provides homeless mothers and their children a safe place to live to achieve self-sufficiency through education, vocational training, and personal growth. Typically, families come from difficult and abusive circumstances and all have been homeless. The program has evolved over the years and initially served only five to eight mothers who often shared the small apartments. In 2005, Catholic Charities doubled capacity by adding six new apartments and renovating the original building which included a day care center. In 2012, seven more apartments were added. We are expanding again! A two-building complex located just one lot away from the current offices will add five individual residences creating 22 in total. The front building will house staff along with one resident apartment and the back building will contain four additional apartments. Once staff moves to the new offices, the current office building will be modified to incorporate a conference room for life skills classes, meetings, and volunteer training, as well as a storage room. Whew!  We plan to open the new apartments in September.

Bethesda House in Sarasota, a drop-in community center for people living with the HIV virus, is celebrating the recent decision by the Sarasota City Commission to reopen the program's nutrition center. The City Zoning Commission voted to close the nutrition center in December 2016 for zoning reasons. After 27 years of operation, the more than 250 low-income clients of Bethesda House had no place to receive the high-protein and fresh nutritious food they need to remain healthy. The city commission agreed to review the devastating decision and Bethesda House clients were offered the use of the Caritas food pantry for non-perishable items. Through the generosity of Catholic parishes, donors, community partners, we also distributed grocery cards on a bi-weekly basis to clients so they could purchase fresh produce and protein. On June 19, after numerous meetings with officials, the city commission approved new zoning language to allow Bethesda House to continue the nutrition center! The reopening happened on July 3.

Space Week at Summer Camp.
It's hard to believe that another school year has ended at St. Martha's Early Learning Center in Sarasota. The children had a busy year making new friends, exploring the classroom environment, and preparing for kindergarten success. All of students who participated in the preschool program are meeting or exceeding school readiness expectations. Once again, the center participated in the Look for the Stars Quality Improvement Program. This program assigns a star rating (zero to five stars) based on a thorough assessment of environment and programmatic practices. The staff was recognized as providing consistent exemplary quality services and given a 4.5-star rating! Thanks to a generous donor, Summer Camp was available again at St. Martha's Early Learning Center. The camp offers children the opportunity to build on important school readiness concepts while enjoying themes such as cooking week, under the sea week, space week, water play days, and much more.

The Family Counseling Center in Naples is proud to announce Janeth Tamara completed her requirements to be a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. (Yes, this means she passed her exam!) Janeth has worked in our youth counseling program since 2013 and provides cognitive behavioral therapy in English and Spanish to children at our center and a local elementary school. We congratulate her on this incredible achievement!

The Judy Sullivan Family Resource Center in Naples is closed for renovation until November 1. But please note that only the building is closed! The food pantry services relocated to the St. Vincent de Paul and we are grateful for their generosity. Legal Aid provides space for us to hold a mobile food pantry at their location as well. In addition, the Empowerment, Refugee Resettlement, and Direct Assistance programs are being housed in our District Office/Family Counseling Center building. Thankfully, Parkside Elementary School provides space for our volunteers to pack 250 bags of food for hungry school children every week. We are all excited and looking forward to the reopening!

Pantry on Wheels.
Guadalupe Social Services  (GSS) in Immokalee added a new program called Pantry on Wheels. Through the generosity of Publix Super Markets Charities, Inc., and Walmart, GSS has purchased a cargo van to deliver bags of food to residents who cannot get to our food pantry. Monthly, volunteers and staff deliver 100 bags of food. We are proud of staff and volunteers who recognized this need and sought out funding to provide this new food delivery program.

In 2018, Catholic Charities in Collier County will be celebrating 50 Years of Changing Lives. Begun in 1968 through the efforts of Judy Sullivan along with grants from United Way and the Archdiocese of Miami, Catholic Charities was born! We will begin our year of celebrating with a ribbon cutting at the reopening of the Judy Sullivan Family Resource Center in Naples and end the year with a special dinner at the Casa Maria Soup Kitchen in Immokalee. Join us in the wonderful celebration of our birth!

NEWCOMER
New Paradigm of Catholic Charities

Kathy and Dave Nelson
New Paradigm of Catholic Charities is a new program to our organization that provides affordable, transitional housing to families in Port Charlotte who are at risk of becoming homeless. The two-year program is designed to help families develop the skills necessary to live an independent life through financial training, credit repair services, counseling, and parenting classes.

The New Paradigm Foundation was founded in 2001 as a non-profit by David and Kathy Nelson to serve families in the community with one-time financial needs. The Nelson's real estate company funded the Foundation until 2011, when the Foundation received nine properties comprised of 15 housing units from Charlotte County to begin a transitional housing program. To ensure growth and continuance of the program, a partnership with Catholic Charities was established in late 2016. New Paradigm of Catholic Charities offers an efficient and effective program that serves families in need.

Kathy serves as the program director. Welcome Kathy and Dave to Catholic Charities!

Casa San Juan Bosco has been the place to be this summer! Through an arrangement with All Faith's Food Bank and the Sarasota County School District, hot lunch has been served to about 75 parents and children four days a week. Children also may pick up snack bags whenever they wish at the two community centers located in the farm worker housing development.

Summer Camp also was offered at Casa San Juan Bosco at the community center with about 45 kindergarten to sixth grade students attending. We were especially pleased to be able to afford volunteer opportunities at the Summer Camp for several teens who provided invaluable assistance. The Zumba class, which happens three mornings a week at the center, also continues to be popular and now includes several children!

Immigration and Refugee Services

Did you know there are over 65 million displaced persons in the world due to conflict and persecution? The Refugee Resettlement Program has welcomed over 84 refugees so far this year. The majority of our folks are coming from Ukraine. Since 2014, over 10,000 people have perished in a war inside Eastern Ukraine in towns bordering with Russia. We have petitioned for over 200 family members to be reunited in Sarasota County through the Affidavit of Relationship.  The process has a filing deadline of August 31 and takes weeks to complete with large applications sent overseas and back to the U.S. As the deadline is quickly approaching, we are buzzing with visitors who are looking to be reunited with family members from Ukraine and other nearby former Soviet states. Our office is unique in that we have resettled many of the folks in the past two decades who are now petitioning for their relatives. Our staff provides applications and instructions in Ukrainian and Russian. We are one of only a handful of agencies in the country that provide this service free of charge.

On Another Topic: Have you had a visitor at your office looking for services who claims to be a Cuban or Haitian refugee or parolee, or an asylee with a recently approved asylum letter? Give us a call, we may be able to help.

Lee, Hendry and Glades Counties

Catholic Charities in Lee, Hendry and Glades Counties welcomes Milly Clark as a new staff member at the Elizabeth Kay Galeana Center in Fort Myers. Milly will be assisting with the preparation of the Venetian Charity Ball as well as with administrative duties. She comes to us with experience in planning the Cattle Barons' Ball for the American Cancer Society.

We regret that Alex Olivares, program director for the Human Trafficking Victim Assistance Program, will be leaving his position at Catholic Charities. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. Alex made many key contributions to our program over the years and leaves us with robust services meeting the critical needs of victims of human trafficking. We are very excited to have just opened a new transitional home for victims of human trafficking to live in while they are involved in our program. Plans are underway to open one or two more houses very soon in the Bonita Springs and Fort Myers areas. Transitional housing is an important component to the program that offers long-term assistance.

Clare House has undergone a bit of a face lift. It has been painted, large trees were removed from the front entrance for better visibility, and the reception area was renovated to enhance its appearance. A new sign will be installed soon. Our Senior Support Coordination, Positive Youth Development, and Human Trafficking Victim Assistance programs are located at Clare House.

SPOTLIGHT
Boca Grande Day Care Center

HIGH FIVE for kindergarten!
The five-year-old children at the Boca Grande Child Care Center of Catholic Charities are excited and ready for kindergarten this August! The center is located on Gasparilla Island adjacent to Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church and serves 30 children from ages one to five. M ost day care families do not live on the island but the parents are employed by local businesses. Our parents can go to work each day confident that their children are nearby enjoying fun filled days packed with valuable experiences which help prepare them for kindergarten. The children also gain valuable social skills through interactions with their classmates and guidance from their teachers. The children participate in daily lessons and activities ranging from American Sign Language basics, colors and shapes, sorting and classifying, numbers and counting, letters and sounds, STEM skills (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), art, music and more.  This fall we will proudly send 10 children off to kindergarten with the skills they need to succeed!
