Volunteers Needed to Help Love Our Mothers Do you have a heart for supporting mothers and their children? Catholic Charities Transitional and Maternity Housing ministry, a pro-life ministry for pregnant and single mothers and their children, is desperately seeking childcare volunteers on Wednesday nights from 6-7pm in Woodbridge, so that the mothers can attend weekly Life Skills classes.

Catholic Charities Therapists Help Strengthen Mental Health May is the month of Mary and mothers. It is also the month traditionally set aside to raise awareness to another “m” word - mental health. Mental health counseling, provided at Catholic Charities Family Services, is one of Catholic Charities' most common referrals for services.  Bishop Burbidge, aware of increasing mental health concerns among families in the diocese, released a special message about the importance of mental health awareness.

And Catholic Charities counselors, who offer daily offer in-person and virtual mental health therapy, released a series of videos offering tips for strengthening mental health.

Men Find an Advocate in St. Joseph There's now a special advocate for the formerly homeless men who reside in the Catholic Charities Christ House transitional housing program, and the staff who serve them. On May 1, at the feast of St. Joseph the Worker, Fr. Edward Hathaway, rector of the nearby Basilica of St. Mary, consecrated the men’s ministry to St. Joseph, offering as its patron the foster father of our Lord, Jesus, and the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He was adopted as a model of wisdom, perseverance, protecting help, and hard work. Staff may voluntarily pray the litany of St. Joseph daily for the needs and intentions of Christ House. A theology of St. Joseph will be woven into life lessons, Bible studies, and case management. Residents will be offered an opportunity to walk with their case manager through a 33-day consecration to St. Joseph. When appropriate, Case Manager Clint Madison says he has discussed St. Joseph’s virtues to the residents, Catholic or otherwise, including exploring how St. Joseph “utilized prayer, virtue, and sound action to meet those challenges and responsibilities with excellence.”

“The response from residents who are not Catholic has been positive and fruitful,” Madison says. “I have seen residents rise into states of encouragement and greater awareness of their human dignity. They become more hopeful and motivated in response to the challenges they face."   We invite our Catholic Charities friends to join us in praying the litany on behalf of these residents.
