Catholic Democrats Congratulates Senator Kerry On Being Nominated as Secretary of State

Boston, Mass. - Catholic Democrats is congratulating Massachusetts Senator John F. Kerry (D-MA), who was nominated today by President Barack Obama to become the next Secretary of State.  If confirmed, Senator Kerry will replace Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to become the nation's top diplomat.  Senator Kerry was first elected to the US Senate in 1985, and has been the Chairman of the Senate's Foreign Relations Committee since 2009.

"In 2004, Senator Kerry became the first Catholic to be his party's presidential nominee since 1960, and we were proud to stand with him then as Catholics for Kerry," said Dr. Patrick Whelan, president emeritus of Catholic Democrats.  "Thousands of Catholics across the country celebrated the fact that this war hero from the Vietnam era was increasingly an advocate for peace in the wake of the ill-considered invasion of Iraq. John Kerry's Catholicism is very important to him, and he is the kind of public figure who brings together intellectual rigor and respect for the wisdom of the Catholic Social Tradition in service to the Common Good.  We have every confidence that he will be, like Secretary Clinton, a powerful diplomat on the international stage and will continue reconstructing the leadership role of the United States as a force for peace in the world."
