This Week's Topic: The Eucharist

"Since Christ himself has said, 'This is my Body,' who shall dare to doubt that it is his Body?" (Saint Cyril of Jerusalem)

"In the humble signs of bread and wine, changed into his Body and Blood, Christ walks beside us as our strength and our food for the journey..." (Pope Saint John Paul II)

"The courage and strength that are in me are not of me, but of him who lives in me - it is the Eucharist" (Saint Faustina Kowalska)

"A thousand years of enjoying human glory is not worth even an hour spent sweetly communing with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament." (Saint Pio of Pietrelcina)

"Jesus has made himself the Bread of Life to give us life. If you really want to grow in love, come back to the Eucharist, come back to Adoration." (Saint Teresa of Calcutta)

From Symbolon: The Catholic Faith Explained Part 2, Episode 2, "The Eucharist: Source & Summit of Christian Life":

It looks like bread and wine, yet it is called the Real Presence of Jesus. It is also called the Eucharist, but many Catholics would struggle to explain what that word means. What do Catholics really believe about the Sacrament of the Eucharist, and why has it become the center point of the Mass and our lives as Catholics?

National Eucharistic Revival

Throughout 2022 to 2025, the US bishops have organized the National Eucharistic Revival, inviting all Catholics in our country to rekindle our love for Jesus Christ present in the Eucharist. Last July, more than 60,000 Catholics gathered in Indianapolis for the 10th National Eucharistic Congress. We hope you enjoy this video of the homily for the closing Mass of the NEC, given by papal envoy Cardinal Luis Tagle.

Ave Verum Corpus

Ave verum corpus,

natum de Maria Virgine,

vere passum,

immolatum

in cruce pro homine:

Cuius latus perforatum

unda fluxit sanguine.

Esto nobis praegustatum

in mortis examine:

O dulcis! O pie!

O Jesu fili Mariae,

miserere mei.

Amen.

Hail true body,

born of the Virgin Mary,

who truly suffered

and were sacrificed

on the cross for mankind,

from whose pierced side

water flowed, and blood.

Be a foretaste for us

in the trial of death:

O sweet! O merciful!

O Jesus, son of Mary,

have mercy on me.

Amen.

Blessed (soon to be Saint!) Carlo Acutis

Blessed Carlo Acutis will be recognized as the first millenial saint when he is canonized on April 27, 2025. Carlo was an Italian teenager who died of leukemia in 2006 at age 15. He enjoyed films, comics, soccer, and playing popular video games - but more important to Carlo than any of these hobbies was his relationship with Jesus Christ present in the Eucharist. Carlo attended Mass daily, volunteered as a catechist to accompany others toward First Communion and Confirmation, and even created a website devoted to Eucharistic miracles.
