"Faith, hope, and love remain, these three;
but the greatest of these is love."
~ 1 Corinthians 13:3
Sunday's Readings:

First Reading — God appoints Jeremiah as prophet to the nations (Jeremiah 1:4-5, 17-19).

Psalm — I will sing of your salvation (Psalm 71).

Second Reading — Love with its many facets is the most important of the virtues (1 Corinthians 12:31 — 13:13 [13:4-13]).

Gospel — When Jesus claims his salvific mission is for all people, not just the Jews, he is expelled by the enraged members of the Nazarean synagogue (Luke 4:21-30).
To Be a Prophet
Sunday’s readings show us what it is like to be a prophet. As Jeremiah recounts his call, God warns him that he will need strength and perseverance to withstand the hostility he will face from “Judah’s kings and princes” and “its priests and people” (Jeremiah 1:18b). God also assures him that they “will not prevail over you, for I am with you” (1:19). The psalm reflects both of these struggles as well as deliverance from them (“salvation”).

This is exactly what Jesus experiences in today’s Gospel. After he claims that his own mission is the same as what Isaiah proclaimed, at first the people marvel at his “gracious words” (Luke 4:22). Soon, however, they become suspicious, skeptical, and hostile, even threatening to kill him. But just as God promised to deliver Jeremiah, so Jesus “passed through the midst of them and went away” (4:30).

Pasta Dinner Fundraiser
OLBS Youth Ministry will be serving up delicious pasta dinners again this year on Saturday, February 5th following the 5pm Mass at St. Julian. For everyone's safety, meals will be served to-go style and will include garlic bread and a side salad.

Your free-will offering (suggested donation $10) will help offset the cost of the Summer Mission Trip to Catholic Heart Work Camp.

If you are able to help cook, prep or pack for the Pasta Dinner, please sign-up so Mr. Van knows how many volunteers he'll have. Reminder for teens, if you are going on the Mission Trip, you must volunteer!

School Report
Catholic Schools Week Starts Sunday!

We begin our Catholic Schools Week celebration on Sunday, January 30 at the 10:30am Mass at QR. All families are invited to attend Mass and we ask that all current K-8 students come in uniform to show QR School pride. Immediately following the Mass, we will have a scaled back Open House for families to visit their child/ren’s classrooms.

To avoid overcrowding in the classrooms, hallways, lobby and gym, Ms. McGinn is asking families with the last name beginning with:
  • (A-L) visit from 11:30 to 12: 15
  • (M-Z) visit from 12:30 to 1:15
RE Roundup
There will be no RE classes on Saturday, January 29. Parents of children preparing to receive the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion will meet Saturday, January 29 at 10am in QR Church. This meeting is geared for parents, so if you must bring your children, please provide something for them to read or work on.

At the meeting, OLBS will welcome veteran teacher Mrs. Karen Vance as she shares her wisdom gained from 45 years experience preparing children for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Her contributions to our sacramental preparation program are very much appreciated. Mrs. Vance has requested that parents bring a photograph of their child to hold in their hands as she speaks.
We will also welcome any questions parents may have in preparation for the blessed days ahead!
This Sunday, January 30, CLW will be at the 10:30am Mass at QR. Please check our parish calendar for the full Sunday schedule!
Children's Liturgy of the Word
We invite children at select Masses—after the opening prayer of the Mass—to join a Children’s Liturgy of the Word leader for a “child-based” lesson on the Scripture of the day. Children return to their parents just before the Liturgy of the Eucharist begins.
  • CLW follows the RE calendar and runs from September to May.
  • CLW sessions are approximately 15-minutes to discuss the readings of the day
  • No registration necessary, children 4-years and older present at the Mass will be invited to CLW by the celebrant
  • CLW takes place in the sacristy at QR or in a classroom at SJE
  • CLW rotates at the 9:15am or 10:30am Masses, check the Parish calendar for specific dates
  • CLW uses the Promise series from Pflaum Weekly
Youth Ministry Corner
Our next fundraising event to help offset costs of this Summer's mission trip to Catholic Heart Work Camp will be our February 5th Pasta Dinner. Service hours available! Volunteering for this is mandatory for teens going to CHWC, but all OLBS teens are welcome to help, even if you will not be going to CHWC!

If you are not able to participate in the dinner but would like to contribute, donations to help purchase food are always welcome.
