We want to start this Furfriend Tale by saying that not all stories have a happy ending, but all stories have meaning.
Thanks to you, Maize had the best
chance a dog could ask for
This story starts on the day Maize found herself at the Iowa City Animal Care & Adoption Center. She arrived with very little information on her history and went through the normal intake process: medical exam, behavioral testing, vaccines then quarantine and observation.
Staff soon noticed Maize wasn't eating well and put her on high-level observation. The next day Maize was unable to hold down food and was scheduled for an emergency vet visit, then rushed to Des Moines for emergency surgery due to the current emergency vet shortage in our area.
The veterinarian who performed Maize's surgery found what looked to be black trash bag pieces, corn cobs and other inedible objects. He believed Maize got into a bag of garbage before arriving at the Animal Center, meaning it had been in her intestine for quite some time and was causing sepsis. Everyone believed Maize would pull through after removing the damaged intestine so we continued full steam ahead with treatments. While in recovery Maize continued to struggle with sepsis and was eventually unable to stabilize.
Your donations allowed Maize to receive the best chance medicine could give her. We hope you know how much you meant to Maize. She received so much kindness and compassion from people who never knew her. Thank you.
