March 2023

Welcome back to "Cattle Tales from the Flint Hills," our monthly E-Newsletter with tales (and tails) that shape the Flint Hills.

March is Women’s History Month, a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture, and society, and has been observed annually in the United States since 1987. Let's explore the influence of women on the ranch.

"Dig into women’s work on the farm historically, meet a few farmers in Kansas, discover organizations supporting women in agriculture and learn how important women are in farming today,” in this article from Kansas Farm Food Connection.

“… women are reclaiming major roles on ranches – a trend that’s largely due to ranching evolving into a well-rounded industry focused on business, animal husbandry, and the environment rather than just physical strength.” Read how women are growing their presence on farms and ranches.

Letter from the Board President

On behalf of the Pioneer Bluff's Board of Directors I am writing to tell you that we are beginning our search for our next Executive Director. Lynn Smith, Pioneer Bluffs Executive Director since our beginning in 2008, has told us that it is time for her to retire. Sadly, we accept her decision.

For the first fifteen years, through renovation of the huge white barn and all the growing pains of a young organization, Lynn worked tirelessly. Her previous expertise in the non-profit arena and her professionalism over-all were keys to Pioneer Bluff's success. She ensured that the Board's visions became reality. We thank her for all she has done, and we wish her well.

The Board now turns to the search for a new Executive Director to continue exploring the ranching heritage of the Flint Hills. We seek a person with non-profit management experience, who is enthusiastic about our mission and has good interpersonal relationship, organizational and leadership skills. A background in ranching would be advantageous.

Please feel free to share news of Lynn's retirement and our search for a new Executive Director. Deadline for applications is March 20, 2023.

For questions or comments regarding the search, please contact me, Nancy Mattke, at 316-833-8904 or email at Nmattke1452@gmail.com
