Updates from the Chromosome 18 Clinical Research Center:

  • Last week, Dr. Cody attended the American Society for Human Genetics Annual Meeting in Boston, MA. This is the largest human genetics and genomics meeting in the world!
  • Dr. Karkar is scheduled to present a poster on How common are seizures for each of the chromosome 18 conditions with regard to types, age of onset, medication success and failure? at the American Epilepsy Society Conference in December 2025
  • Dr. Syed received a pilot grant for a project that would apply AI to medical records and look to improve our ability to acquire, update, curate, catalog, and analyze data from the 700 participants enrolled in the chromosome 18 longitudinal research study
  • 37 videos have been evaluated and there are 6 in progress for the study Are people with 18p- showing early signs of FSHD2 or SCA28? The data is being organized with the hope to move to publication soon.

This month, Dr. Karkar shares an article on the causes and treatment of tremors. Please enjoy the article below.

Causes and Treatment of Action-Postural Tremors

Tremors have been reported in our cohort of chromosome 18 genetic conditions, in particular 18q-, 18p- and Ring 18. Tremors often have underlying genetic causes, with factors in one’s life – such as the use of certain medications, caffeine, stress – sometimes exacerbating pre-existing tremors. There are medications proven to be effective in improving tremors, mainly Propranolol and Primidone. Surgical options, such as deep brain stimulation, are also available in cases of disabling tremors that do not respond sufficiently to medications... Click HERE to read the full article.
