MR. PLAIA '00
Birmingham Hockey Fights Cancer
Watch Mr. Plaia play hockey and raise money for a good cause!
Dear JCCHS Community,
I know many of us have been affected, or have friends, family, and loved ones who have been affected by cancer in some way. This year, until March 31st, I will be raising money for the American Cancer Society in honor of my dad, Joe Plaia, a '69 graduate of John Carroll who passed away two years ago after a four-year-long battle with both prostate cancer and adinoid cystic carcinoma. If you would like to read more about my dad's story and make a small donation to the cause, visit my ACS Fundraiser Page.
Now, I am not the athlete my dad was (he was an amazing athlete at JCCHS), but on Monday nights I moonlight as a mediocre amateur ice hockey player. Through this weekly intense form of exercise, I found out that the American Cancer Society was teaming up with Hockey Fights Cancer and was putting together two teams of 15 amateur players like myself to play each other in an exhibition game in the Birmingham Bulls Arena in Pelham to further raise money to help the ACS fund cancer research, patient support, and advocacy efforts.
So, I will be playing in honor of my dad on October 10th at 10 AM if anyone is looking for something fun to do on a cool Saturday morning in October. You can laugh at me, heckle me, or cheer me on; I don't care because it is all for a great cause!
Admittance to the game is free, although small donations are encouraged. There are a ton of other fun ways to raise funds and support the cause throughout the game.
I hope to see you at the rink on 10/10 at 10 AM!
