BURNS
(AN UPDATE)

It's June. Any stinknet still standing is now a HUGE wildland fire hazard since it has become dry and is combustible. Those dry stalks will feed the smallest spark into huge flames that can race through and engulf an entire community. The most effective defense is cutting it down so it doesn’t remain standing. Doing this will slow a fire’s spread should a wildland fire occur. Also, at this point, according to Jim Ford, Director of Community Risk Reduction/Emergency Fire & Medical Service for the Town of Cave Creek,
residents can protect their homes by “…addressing the defensible spaces along roadways and next to their houses and other structures.”
PLEASE let's be proactive!
Slice it down and remove it - now…BEFORE it feeds a devastating wildland fire.

They Need Us!

When the temps go UP, the numbers of visitors to our town go DOWN.
And, so does business for the local merchants we love.

Summer season is when supporting local merchants is most important!

Remember...Cave Creek shops and restaurants are the BEST for something special that can't be found anywhere else! Plus, they're convenient and friendly, too.

We love our local shops, restaurants, and services. Let's be sure to support them, especially during their slow season.

Community Launches Whistle Safety Program
By Cheri Jensen

A whistle. It could be the difference between life and death.

But this whistle is not a toy. It is specially designed to summon help in an emergency. The whistles can aid search and rescue teams in finding people stranded without cell service or other means of rescue.

The non-profit Arizona Foothills 911 recently launched the “Arizona Whistle Initiative.” They’re distributing free safety packs and info with the whistle, Liquid IV hydration packets and valuable emergency information. They’re also giving out free “Ready, Set, Go” bags containing disaster safety protocol.

“The key is preparation,” said founder Sunny Parker at a recent distribution event. “The whistle is an important part of a safety plan to help those enjoy our beautiful hikes, trails and outdoor areas in a safe manner.”

The whistle can be as loud as 120 decibels. It’s as loud as a siren. Some areas don’t have adequate cell service, thus the whistle cry can be the difference between survival or worse. It’s recommended wearers use a neck lanyard for easy access.

Volunteers, fire certified teams, local businesses and AZ Foothills 911 members are distributing or sponsoring the bags and whistle information at several sites around Cave Creek. Donations help pay for the free whistles.

Parker started the initiative after the tragic death of two hikers last year. “This is my way to try and make sure this doesn’t happen again, or at least put it in their favor,” she recently told a visitor picking up safety bags at the Spur Cross Trailhead.

For more information about Arizona Foothills 911, the whistle program or to donate, click HERE or visit their Facebook page.

Mayor's Corner
Dear Cave Creek Residents and Merchants,

The most consistent complaint I hear is speeding. Our town has not only residents driving, but the through traffic going to Bartlett Lake, north Carefree and far north Scottsdale, Tonto Hills, Tonto Forest and Desert Mountain. In addition, there are concerning statistics on pedestrian safety along Cave Creek Road in the town core.

I, and I hope everyone, agree that safety is always the top priority. Cave Creek Road has the combination of speed and pedestrian population that make it the highest roadway risk in town.

The combination of speeding in the town core with crosswalks and limited walking paths is a serious risk. Some changes were made to improve the situation. The crosswalks/warning lights north of Harold’s, and the flashing red lights on the Schoolhouse/Cave Creek Road intersection stop signs, have helped somewhat. But more is needed.

Before I go further, there is a caveat. Money is in the draft budget for the improvements. But, final budget approval and the approval of specific items and contracts must occur before a firm course is set.

In my opinion, I strongly favor targeted and enhanced traffic speeding enforcement. This is underway. We have contracted for extra sheriff’s traffic enforcement that can be moved anywhere in town that problems show up.

The first step is usually placing a speed trailer on the problem street.
That trailer flashes the speed to the motorist plus it records time of day and speed. Thus, officers can be sent to a street at the specific time most likely to experience speeding.

Statistics show the number of speeding tickets has already increased dramatically.

Other changes in the works specific to the town core are new walkways in the entertainment district along with traffic calming, and lighted/raised crosswalks.

Why not sign up for the Town emails with notice of council meetings? That way you can follow progress and express your opinion in making our town safer!

Regards,

Mayor Robert Morris

Town Manager's Corner
Dear Cave Creek Residents and Merchants,

At the Regular Town Council Meeting on May 16, 2023, the Town Council adopted the 2023-2024 tentative budget in the amount of $56,555,961. Adoption of the tentative budget caps the total expenditures of the fiscal year’s budget. Following this approval, expenditures can be moved within the budget or reduced, but the overall total expenditures cannot be increased.

Town of Cave Creek 2023-2024 Fiscal Budget Summary:

The budget is organized into breakouts of ongoing budgeting versus one-time activities. An overview of each fund as well as particulars can be found organized into the following fund types:

The General Fund ($17,389,660): is the primary operating fund of the Town and is used to account for the day-to-day operations and services traditionally associated with local government.

Special Revenues Funds ($4,726,504): include the Highway User Revenue Fund (HURF), Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Fund, Parks & Trails Fund, Open Space Acquisition, and Grant Funds.

Capital Project Funds ($12,366): includes the Cave Creek Water Infrastructure Fund and the Open Space & Trails Fund. These two funds are made up of development fees that the Town no longer collects. Once these funds are expended, this fund type will end.

Total Enterprise Funds ($34,427,431): Used to maintain the Town’s three Enterprise Funds for Wastewater, Cave Creek Water, and Desert Hills Water.

For a total tentative budget adoption of $56,555,961

Breakdown of Expenditures by Fund Type:
Utilities: 58%
General Fund: 31%
Special Revenue: 11%

This budget addresses and meets the needs of this Town at the very basic level of safety, fire, and water/sewer. The budget specifically includes expenditure authority for pedestrian safety, the Phoenix interconnect project that will give us water reliability and a back-up supply of water, fixing roads that have fallen into disrepair and additional traffic enforcement added to the budget to provide essential speed control on Cave Creek Road and within neighborhoods.

The next step in the budget process will be a public hearing on Monday, June 5, 2023, to consider comments from the public on the Town’s Final Budget Adoption. After the public hearing, it is the Council’s intent to adopt the Final Budget for Fiscal Year 2023-2024.

The Marshal's Corner
Greetings from the Marshal,

As we enter June, we've already witnessed our first Red Flag warning days. The area is dry and the conditions for a fire are all present. Please remember to eliminate all spark generating activities around your property. Take precautions, trim away all dead brush and dispose of it properly. Eliminate fuels. Have a plan.

In the event of a fire or other emergency, have a “GO” bag readily available with the essentials you NEED to grab. Sign up for the Town of Cave Creek’s Emergency Alert System CodeRed (Links are on our website and in this newsletter). Download the Weather Alert App from CodeRed as well.

We need to discuss slowing down when driving. We're seeing more and more folks driving too fast through town. Follow the speed limits. Slow Down. Enjoy the scenery. Stop texting and driving. Stop road rage. People are not intentionally trying to upset you by driving the speed limit; they are following the law. We need to relax. Be civil. We are all neighbors.

The other day I saw something that reminded me how proud I am to be your marshal. A resident was broken down on the side of Cave Creek Road. I stopped to offer my assistance, but two other residents had pulled over and said, “We got this.” Neighbors helping neighbors. Creekers. We need to all remember, we are neighbors.

Have a great June. The monsoons are coming. Stay out of the flooded washes and roadways. Enjoy Cave Creek and all of it’s beauty. Watch the sunrise and sunset.

Stay safe,
Marshal Stein

Summer Hiking

The heat of summer is not the best time to be hiking in the desert, but if you must, please remember the following:

1.Start out and return early, when the worst heat of the day has not yet set in.
2.Let someone know where and when you'll be hiking.
3.Hike with at least one other person.
4.Select the correct hike difficulty and length for your ability.
5.Wear a light-weight, long sleeved shirt and cool long pants.
6.Wear a hat that protects your face.
7.Apply sunscreen (preferably SPF 50).
8.Wear appropriate closed hiking shoes.
9.Carry plenty of water, and then hydrate-hydrate-hydrate.
10.Turn around after you have consumed half your water of liquid hydration.
11.Carry a hiking whistle (many areas don't have cell service).
12.Let your contact person (#2) know when you've returned from your hike.
Taste of Cave Creek Corner
An Update on "The Taste"

On May 2, event organizer and Stagecoach Village General Manager, Patty Pollnow, met with approximately 50 enthusiastic attendees at the very first community meeting for the Taste of Cave Creek. Local restaurants, bars, businesses, and residents alike look forward to reviving this signature event last celebrated in 2019. This year's “Taste” is set for October 18 and 19 at Stagecoach Village.

As in previous years, the event will include a beer garden, live music in the gazebo, a variety of vendors and, of course, delicious local restaurant tastes. Admission is $10 and will be sold at the front gate and at local businesses (TBA). Sample food tickets of $4 and $6 will be sold at the front gate.
The layout for the event was on display at the meeting and includes tents on loan from the Town of Cave Creek. Each tent will include two tables and two chairs. Arizona Rangers will be providing 24/7 security. Forms for participation in the event are available on the “Taste” website.

Approximately 5,000 attendees are anticipated for the two-night event. Concern over parking was voiced and Pollnow assured everyone solutions will be in place.

This year's Taste of Cave Creek should prove to be an amazing, fun-filled family event where the community can gather for a sampling of local restaurant fare as well as a darned good time!

Everyone is encouraged to fill out and return forms located HERE as soon as possible. Also, be sure to attend the next “Taste” meeting being held 2pm at Stagecoach Village, Tate Studio (Suite 105), on Tuesday, July 25.

Taste of Cave Creek is a fundraiser for Operation Santa Claus. Premier sponsors of the event are Sanderson Ford and Sanderson Lincoln, Max Sistins, Patrick Heigl, Jenny Kester and Rebecca Lombardo.

For additional information, go to the website HERE or contact Patty Pollnow at (480) 204-0140 or by emailing her HERE.
Local Landmarks Corner

The Town of Cave Creek was honored to make the following three local Landmarks presentations during the month of May.
Local Library Literally
Becomes a Landmark!

On June 4, 1930, the seeds of the Desert Foothills Library began to grow. It started with a collection of books in boxes, traveling around the dusty roads of Cave Creek in the trunk of a car. The books found shelter in various homes in town and even spent time in the shelves of the local liquor store. Over the past 70 years, the library has grown and multiplied in its service and place here in the desert. Where the books lived conversation was valued and always spirited. And so it is today. Our library is an example of the “Best of Us” with essential space, information services and a warm and helpful welcome. Our Desert Foothills Library is truly an iconic Local Landmark.

Horny Toad Has Tales to Tell

With beginnings as a family home in 1932, this iconic restaurant in Cave Creek sports a spicy past. First known as Dirty Will’s Moustache Cup, this watering hole in town was a place to sit and sip under mesquite trees while telling tall tales of the folks who live behind Black Mountain. Having gained a new name as the Horny Toad and living across the road from the Satisfied Frog, the legend continues to grow. Legendary these days for fried chicken and strawberry shortcake, “The Toad “serves folks great food and it all begins with the cheery greeting “Sorry, we’re open!”

The Buffalo Chip:
From Bait Shop to Barbecue

The Buffalo Chip started as a bait shop in 1951. Then, it was turned into a bar known as the Crystal Palace and later named The Maverick becoming a popular stop on the way to Bartlett Lake. Max McGee, the first Green Bay Packer player to score the first touchdown in the first ever two Super Bowls, bought the Maverick and changed its name to The Buffalo Chip Saloon and Steakhouse. In 1998, Larry Wendt purchased The Buffalo Chip from the McGee family. Larry built a kitchen, barbecue area, backyard, bull riding arena with stands and more making it the iconic restaurant it is today. Larry died in 2021. His children Tifani and Travis, continue his legacy.

Arizona Water Corner
Arizona's Water

Recently, guest speaker Thomas McGuire presented information on Arizona’s water crisis to a full-house crowd at the Cave Creek Museum. McGuire, who holds degrees in geology and geology education, shared current facts and data with the goal of helping attendees understand Arizona’s current water crisis, He also discussed what to anticipate for Arizona's water future.

Topics covered at the event included the ways we are currently affected by these shortages and how this water situation might impact us in future years. McGuire also discussed ways we, as individuals, can help the situation.

Due to the popularity of this event, Cave Creek Museum will again feature “Arizona’s Water” on Saturday, June 3 and Saturday, June 17, 2023 from 2-4 pm at the museum. Because of the scope and depth of the subject, it’s advised that participants attend both sessions in June. This event is extremely popular and seating is limited, so registering online HERE is highly recommended..

April 29 was the official Grand Opening for The Honey Baked Ham store in Cave Creek. An official ribbon cutting, however, is what makes an opening "totally" official and that occurred on Thursday, May 4 with community members present for the event. Holding the ribbon cutting Scissors and making the cut were owners Toni and Brett Gilbert. Together, with a team of six HAMFAM members, they move into the exciting adventure of selling delicious Honey Baked Hams, turkey breasts and cafe sandwiches in Cave Creek.

~ Summer Hours ~

June 21, the official first day of summer, is at our heels and the desert heat has preceded it, as always. For us at the Cave Creek Tourism Bureau the heat of summer always means a bit of a slow-down in visitors coming through out door. For this reason, as of June 1, we will switch over to our summer hours of Fri/Sat/Sun from 10am-2pm.

Stop in! Come say hello to our friendly volunteers who love chatting with visitors, especially during summer season. They can introduce you to the tourism bureau and explain how it's there to serve you. Remember, local business promotion at the tourism bureau is a free benefit of having a Cave Creek Town Business License.

During this summer season, we hope our participating merchants will review their rack card needs, reorder and restock, and then drop off that new marketing material at the tourism bureau. This will help us be all set to promote our local business when the tourist season picks up again in the fall.

Happy Cave Creek Summer!
