Caring with the Caring Corp

By Liz Northcott

My name is Liz Northcott and I am a volunteer at the Foothills Caring Corps, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based on Easy Street in Carefree. This organization was founded in 2000 by Canon Steven Dart of Christ Anglican Church and relies on donations and grants to operate. Father Steven's desire was to provide the unmet needs of many senior and disabled Neighbors in our Northeast Valley and Foothills communities.

Scott gives Jaye a helping hand .

Our organization is growing by leaps and bounds as the need increases every year. In fact, it has grown by over 40% in the past decade and in the last year more than 37,000 connections were made. Consequently, more and more volunteers are needed to serve the community in so many different ways.

The Foothills Caring Corps reaches out with services such as medical transportation, friendly visiting or phoning, caregiver relief, a recreational van program which allows “Neighbors” to attend social outings, movies, bingo, lunches, and shopping in handicapped accessible vans. Handyman services are available for minor home repairs and mobile meal deliveries are made three times a week. Assistance is offered for shopping and technology issues. We also have a mobility loan closet available to lend without charge items such as wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, canes, knee scooters, commodes, shower chairs, etc. This service is proving to be especially popular.

Paul and Gail return from a medical appointment.

My husband Alan and I are involved with the mobile meal delivery service (sometimes referred to as “Meals on Wheels”), and once a week we go down to Honor Health hospital kitchen on Thompson Peak to pick up food. We and the other delivery volunteers are each allocated a specific delivery route in a system which is very well organized. We leave with a thermal bag containing the hot meals for that day and another with cold meals for the next day, all of which we distribute over the next 2 hours or so. We also check on how Neighbors are doing.

Approximately 200 meals are delivered on each Monday, Wednesday and Friday over 9 routes. The number of Neighbors needing meals is increasing every month, and consequently, we desperately need more volunteer drivers.

Alan and I really enjoy doing this. We meet many different people in need of meals. We are often probably the only people they see or talk to each day, and possibly their sole connection with the outside world. Alan and I both feel good knowing that our meal deliveries and our visits are the special part of their day.

Alan checks the day's meal deliveries.

Foothills Caring Corps staff and volunteers are a very friendly, caring group of people. Recently, the organization celebrated its 25th Anniversary with a party at the Desert Foothills Library. In addition, get-togethers for the volunteers are organized on a regular basis. We have fun while serving our community and hopefully, making our Neighbors’ lives a little bit easier.

Joann enjoys Carol 's company.

Please consider joining us as a volunteer. Orientations are held on a regular basis at the Carefree offices and at the Anthem Civic building. If you are interested, please come by or call Donna Guerin on 480-488-1105, ext. 104. We would love to meet you and answer any questions.

Mayor's Corner

Cave Creek

Part of Protecting Arizona’s Lifeline

By Mayor Bob Morris

We all rely on the Colorado River, and water is a critical topic of discussion in our region. It is essential that trusted local voices, particularly from communities served by the Central Arizona Project (CAP), speak up and share their insights. Cave Creek receives nearly 90 percent of its water from the Colorado River via the CAP, which makes it critical that, as Town leaders, we are highly engaged and speak up.

Cave Creek has the potential to be one of the most affected towns in Arizona. A national dispute is ongoing between states using water from the Colorado River. While we will not know the outcome or the specific effect on our Town, steps are well underway to buy more water, conserve water, and ensure our issues are included in any statewide resolution. Join me in closely monitoring developments and conserving water in our homes.

CAP invited me to participate in its Coalition for Protecting Arizona's Lifeline video series. This program features a nonpartisan alliance of leaders from both the public and private sectors who advocate for and educate our communities about the importance of long-term water security. You can view these video clips HERE on the CAP website.

Additionally, the Town has recently completed its own video which highlights our current water resources and our efforts to secure more water for the future. This video illustrates how water is delivered to the community, how it's treated for residential use, and what we can do together to protect this valuable resource. Please watch it HERE on the Town's website. By understanding these issues and staying informed with accurate information provided by CAP, the State of Arizona, and the Town of Cave Creek, you'll gain a greater appreciation for the importance of the Colorado River to our community's future.

Enjoy the rest of your summer and stay safe!

Town of Cave Creek

The Marshal's Corner

Greetings from Marshal Stein,

Greetings from the Marshal. I want to take a moment to say, “Thank you!” to all of you who responded to the Town’s most recent CodeRed Alert. A member of our community had an emergency and was missing. I chose to launch a CodeRed Alert to the immediate surrounding neighborhoods asking all of you to check your surrounding property, and we were able to locate our missing neighbor.

As I was on foot searching the area and the washes, I ran into so many people who received the CodeRed Alert and also saw the alert on AZ Foothills 911. It warmed my heart and soul seeing our community respond as neighbors, as community members, and seeing our mayor and council members out walking the trails, searching the washes, and pitching in.

Though we did not have the happy outcome we all hoped and prayed for, we came together. We responded as a community and we all stood together with the goal of helping our neighbor. I am grateful and proud to be your marshal.

Please folks, sign up for CodeRed NOW. It's a free, potentially life saving app. Go to the Town’s website HERE and make certain you are notified by the Town in the event of an emergency. Sign up for the CodeRed Weather Alerts. Stay connected. Get notified. CodeRed is a game changer and the best way to ensure you receive Emergency Notifications from the Town of Cave Creek.

Stay safe. Stay hydrated.
