It will allow the students to discover the county's rich agricultural history, career opportunities in a variety of agricultural sectors, and explore interests specific to their Cecil County communities.

Register Your Poultry

Backyard flock owners are required to register their flocks with the Maryland Department of Agriculture to assist in protecting Maryland's poultry industries from diseases such as HPAI. The information collected helps animal health officials identify at-risk animals and premises. To register please visit Maryland Poultry Premises Registration.

Judging, Skillathon and Quizbowl Opportunities

Dairy Bowl and Skillathon Interest

Looking for a fun way to test your dairy knowledge and learn new things?

Dairy Bowl is a fast-paced quiz game (think Jeopardy! but all about cows and goats) where teams compete to answer questions about breeds, nutrition, health, products, and more. It’s a fun way to learn while working together as a team.

Dairy Skillathon is a hands-on contest with stations where youth identify breeds, feeds, equipment, products, and even parts of the cow. It’s designed to help members build real-world dairy knowledge in an interactive and friendly competition.

No experience is needed, just a willingness to learn and have fun! We’re looking to form teams now, so if you’re interested, sign up here: https://forms.gle/PXXwjKK2L1BJX8yCA. Any questions please email Mackenzie at mljones@umd.edu

Livestock Judging and Skillathon Interest

Livestock Skillathon is an educational contest designed to challenge 4-H members to apply their knowledge of animal science in a hands-on, engaging way. Participants rotate through stations where they might identify livestock breeds and equipment, evaluate feed samples, judge hay and meats, answer questions on anatomy and nutrition, or work through real-life management scenarios. The focus is on learning by doing, encouraging problem-solving, critical thinking, and practical application of skills. Skillathon also promotes sportsmanship and provides an opportunity to meet other youth with similar interests, making it both an educational and fun experience. Sign up here: https://forms.gle/adZT4TaQkeya8V6Q7.

Food, Nutrition & Wellness

University of Maryland Extension Curates Comprehensive Set of Food Assistance Resources for Marylanders

Food security is under threat with the current debates surrounding SNAP benefits and rising grocery prices. University of Maryland Extension (UME) is dedicated to assisting Maryland’s communities in accessing healthy food close to home, which is why UME has collected a set of state and local resources for organizations and the public to find food relief, including government assistance, pantries, donation information, and tutorials regarding how to use available ingredients in safe meal preparation.

“One of our main priorities in Extension is maintaining a resilient food system that helps Marylanders access safe, nutritious foods for themselves and their families,” said Dr. Jinhee Kim, Associate Dean of UME. “We strive to serve the needs of all of our communities, with faculty and staff available in every county to help keep our people healthy.”

To learn more and access the full list of resources regarding food access in Maryland, go to https://extension.umd.edu/resource/food-access-resources/

Family & Consumer Sciences

Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) programs "strengthens families, farms, communities and the economy by focusing on the human dimensions of food and agriculture. Family and Consumer Sciences includes all topics of considerable importance for maintaining a healthy lifestyle in today’s society.

Expanded Food Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP)

The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) helps young families and youth with limited resources—those most at risk to suffer from hunger, food insecurity and the inability to connect with available support systems.

To learn more about this program or to sign up a group of five or more, contact Tammy Pryor, EFNEP educator at tpryor@umd.edu or call (410)-996-8136.
