City Raises Lifeguard Starting Wage to $15 per Hour

In an effort to recruit more lifeguards to work at Cedar Rapids municipal pools, the City has raised the lifeguard starting wage to $15 per hour. Parks and Recreation Departments across the state of Iowa, and country, are struggling to hire seasonal staff for summer operations, especially pools. The Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation Department has been working on recruiting seasonal staff since December, but has not secured enough lifeguards to safely operate all pools at this time. The Department is hopeful that the increased wage will be more competitive in a difficult hiring environment.

“We offer a great opportunity, especially for first time employees. For kids who want to work full or part-time in a fun, outdoor environment, and still enjoy their summer and make new friends, pools are a great place to be,” said Hashim Taylor, Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation Director.

Individuals interested in being a lifeguard can apply and be hired prior to taking a certification class. Certification classes and training will continue into mid-June to provide every opportunity to reach hiring requirements. Applicants must be 15 years old and a good swimmer to pass the prerequisite skills test. Employees who work through the month of June will receive a refund of 80 percent of the certification class fee.

Apply today at bit.ly/CRSeasonalJobs. Email pools@cedar-rapids.org with questions or to find out when certification classes will be held.

Old MacDonald's Farm is Open

Old MacDonald’s Farm in Bever Park is open for the season. The farm, a petting zoo, is open daily, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. through September 25. Admission is free, but a $1 minimum donation is appreciated.

Old MacDonald’s Farm is home to farm animals and North American waterfowl. The baby animals arrived at the farm on April 24. They include calves, chickens, pygmy goats, lambs, rabbits, ducklings, and piglets. They will be out only during warm weather. Visitors are asked to be patient and to give them time and space to adapt to their new home and to being around so many people. Due to the bird flu outbreak in Iowa, the ducks and chickens will not be out in order to prevent them from contracting it.
