Lacey Turns 60: Let’s Take a Look Back

Sixty years is a big milestone — and the City of Lacey is getting ready to celebrate!

On December 5, 2026, Lacey will mark 60 years as an incorporated city. To celebrate, we’re looking back at the people, projects, programs, and moments that helped shape our community over the past decade.

Beginning October 6, we’ll share 60 highlights over 60 days leading up to our anniversary. From the launch of the Lacey Night Market to new parks, transportation improvements, the new Police Station, Lacey MakerSpace, and more, we’ll highlight projects, programs, and milestones that helped shape Lacey.

But these milestones aren’t just about buildings, programs, or projects. They’re about the people.

Throughout the countdown, we’ll also celebrate the City staff, community partners, elected officials, volunteers, and community members whose ideas, hard work, and support continue to make Lacey a special place to call home.

Follow along on the City's Facebook and Instagram accounts and check LaceyWeekly for a recap of the celebrations in the coming weeks.

60 days. 60 highlights. 60 years of Lacey. And so much to celebrate!

What's All That Water!? Unidirectional Water Line Flushing Begins October 1

Every year from October to May, our Public Works Water Operations Division flushes the main waterlines to keep them clear and clean. This preventative-maintenance practice, called unidirectional waterline flushing, removes sediment and mineral buildup from the waterlines and requires large volumes of water.

So, if you see large amounts of water flowing down the street into storm drains — look around for our crews; they may be flushing the lines nearby. They will also post signs in the area.

The flushing program will not disrupt your service. However, if you have questions or concerns, contact our Public Works Department at 360-491-5644.

Learn more by visiting the Waterline Flushing Program webpage.

Clean Water Starts with You:

Source Water Protection Week

Sunday, September 27 – Saturday, October 3, is Source Water Protection Week! Lacey relies on 20 wells drawing from three underground aquifers to provide safe, reliable drinking water. Since 1995, the City’s Wellhead Protection Program has worked to prevent groundwater contamination and protect this vital resource.

Here are a few ways YOU can make a difference at home:

  • Limit pesticides and fertilizers used for lawn and yard care.
  • Choose natural cleaners like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice.
  • Do not flush medications; drop off expired or unused medications at safe collection sites.

Learn more on the Source Water Protection Week webpage.

Week Without Driving: Join us for a Community Walking Audit on Oct. 6!

Week Without Driving returns October 1 – 8, offering a chance to experience our community from the perspective of people who don’t drive.

Started in Washington, this annual event highlights the everyday challenges—and possibilities—of getting around without a personal vehicle. Take a walk, ride your bike, hop on a bus, catch a ride with a friend, or use a rideshare service. However you participate, stepping away from the driver’s seat can offer a fresh perspective on how we move through our community and what it takes to get where we need to go.

This year, People First of Thurston County will host a Walk Audit in Lacey. You're invited to join them on a guided walk in Lacey around the College Street and Yelm Highway intersection. The walk will begin at the park shelter at Bush Park. Along the way, you’ll learn about Rainier Road improvements and Lacey's updated Bike and Pedestrian Plan, share your perspective, and see firsthand what it’s like to navigate without a car. Mark your calendars and join us for a walk!

Event Details:

  • Date: Tuesday, October 6
  • Time: 4 p.m.
  • Location: Begins at William Bush Park shelter | 4400 Chardonnay Drive SE
