Black History Month

Newton Community Pride is excited to announce that we have partnered with several local organizations on four FREE and accessible community events to celebrate Black History Month. Registration is suggested but not required.


The program is supported by a grant from the Harmony Foundation and a grant from the Newton Cultural Council, a local council that is supported by the Mass Cultural Council and the City of Newton. The Village Bank is the Presenting Sponsor.

Meet the Authors: Lisa Stringfellow & Phoebe Sinclair

Join us for an afternoon of storytelling with authors Lisa Stringfellow and Phoebe Sinclair. Lisa, author of A Comb of Wishes and Kingdom of Dust, and Phoebe, author of Confessions of a Candy Snatcher, will read from their books and discuss the process of creating engaging stories for young readers. This event is perfect for families and readers ages 8-12, though all are welcome! Enjoy an afternoon of literary exploration, get your books signed, and discover new stories to take home.

Curated Guided Tour of Sensory Garden Exhibition with Reception

Experience the intersection of art and the senses in this guided tour of the Sensory Garden exhibition, featuring the work of 23 talented artists. This innovative exhibit offers a unique opportunity to explore a sensory oasis with artwork that you can see, smell, touch, and even taste (with specific signage guiding you). The curator, Chenoa Baker, will lead a discussion on the political, social, and cultural themes captured in the works. Following the tour, enjoy a reception and meet fellow art lovers.

Behind the Screen: Nickel Boys

NCP has partnered with the West Newton Cinema Foundation to present a FREE and informative panel discussion focusing on the themes of the award-winning film, Nickel Boys. The expert panelists will include:


Theodore “Regge” Life – Renowned filmmaker, educator, and Executive Director of Global Film Network Inc.

Naheem Garcia – Celebrated actor and theater educator with a distinguished career in film and theater.

Bradley Craig – Assistant Professor of History and African American & Black Diaspora Studies at Boston University.


Moderated by: Dr. Myisha S. Eatmon – Assistant Professor at Harvard University, specializing in African American history and law.

Mark Copeland & Friends Concert

Linda Plaut Festival of the Arts & Community Micro Grant Applications OPEN

Calling all creatives! Our two spring 2025 grant applications are open. This year you may apply for a community micro grant or the NEW Linda Plaut Festival of the Arts grant (or both!). NCP is thrilled to support and amplify creative and arts-filled programming in the City of Newton. Meet Maggie Smith Chaviano: NCP's Boston Marathon Runner

Maggie, a proud Bostonian and Newton resident, is excited to run the 2025 Boston Marathon on behalf of Newton Community Pride. With years of experience working at New Balance, this race has been a long-time goal of hers. What makes it even more special is the chance to have her three children cheering her on along the race route. Maggie is honored to run for NCP, per her words, she is,


"so thankful to run for an organization that celebrates art and culture’s ability to bring the community together – an enduring value of mine...Organizations like NCP enrich the lives of our community and make us stronger together. Thank you in advance for your support – in any and every form – here's to a strong 26.2!"
