Happy Disability Pride Month!

July marks a special month for our community—a dedicated time to celebrate the achievements of each person with a disability, and to fight for continued progress toward equality, inclusion, and acceptance. For people with disabilities, this month is also a time to reflect on all we have overcome and to keep pushing toward our goals and dreams!

There are plenty of ways to celebrate Disability Pride Month for anyone who would like to commemorate it. One option is to attend local events that are centered on Disability Pride! Coming up this month, these two free events in Denver are the perfect opportunity to join in the celebration.

July Celebrations & Observances

July is all about Disability Pride! This month, several important celebrations and observances related to disability awareness, inclusion, and equality will be honored by the disability community. See the list below to learn what observances are happening this month, and how you can recognize them, if you choose.

Disability Pride Month: July 1-31

Did you know that more than one in four adults in the United States identifies as a person with a disability? The disability community is larger than some may realize, and Disability Pride Month is a time to recognize the achievements and ongoing struggles of this community. Learn more here.

Fragile X Awareness Month: July 1-31, Fragile X Awareness Day: July 22

Fragile X is an inherited condition related to an alteration on the FMR1 gene on the X chromosome. When a full mutation occurs, it results in Fragile X Syndrome, which may cause intellectual disability. Fragile X Awareness Month is a time to learn more about Fragile X, and a time for individuals with Fragile X to come together as a community. Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Anniversary: July 26

This year is a big milestone for the ADA, marking 35 years since the act was signed by President Bush in 1990! As you likely are aware, the ADA represented a huge step forward for disability rights in America—protecting people with disabilities from many types of discrimination and ensuring equal access to employment, transportation, government services, and more. Before Its Vote, Tell Congress to Prioritize SNAP and Medicaid

In the past 48 hours, individuals have contacted Congress through The Arc US to protect Medicaid and SNAP more than 50,000 times—and now is the time to join them!

Over the past several months, you have heard quite a bit from us about the federal government’s budget legislation, which includes cuts to Medicaid and SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). The current version of the bill, passed by the Senate yesterday, would cut nearly $1 trillion from Medicaid over the next decade, and nearly $200 billion from SNAP.

The House will vote on the bill next. If you oppose these cuts, please speak up! Use this link to contact your House Representatives and ask them to protect Medicaid and SNAP for people with disabilities.
