Earth Day Virtual Celebration

No charge virtual film viewing and discussion – Discussion begins at 7:00 pm

Join Grass River Natural Area in a virtual celebration of the 50 th anniversary of Earth Day.
We want to honor this important day while remaining in compliance with Michigan’s Stay at Home order. GRNA invites you to view the short film Feel of Vision on the REI YouTube channel ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2yzVT-FxHo ) whenever you like before 7:00 pm on Wednesday, April 22. The film powerfully illustrates the healing power of nature as it follows the adventures of the upbeat and inspiring Lonnie Bedwell, a white-water kayaker who is completely blind. At 7:00 on Earth Day, Grass River Natural Area will host a Zoom discussion of the film with Lonnie Bedwell and members of the creative team from Feel of Vision on the one-hour call. Please register for the discussion at grassriver.org /earthdayreg.html in order to receive your invitation to the Zoom meeting. More information is also available by emailing [email protected] .

From Tom Enslen, Superintendent

Dear Elk Rapids Parents and Students,

Welcome to a new era in education for Elk Rapids Public Schools! As you likely know, we have been tasked with the unprecedented responsibility of teaching the final 39 days of school in a remote format. Thanks to previous Elk Rapids Schools initiatives and successful bond votes, we are uniquely positioned to accept this challenge. However, just like traditional learning, educators need student and parent commitment to succeed. I hope you will join us on this unique journey to prepare each of our Elk Rapids students for the next step academically...... ........ Continue Reading

UNANTICIPATED SCHOOL CLOSURE FEEDING PROGRAM These are the details of the meals provided for any student, 18 year of age and under, by Elk Rapids School District:
1. The two sites for pickup are Mill Creek Elementary and Cherryland Middle School. At Mill Creek it is by the garage door on the east side of building. At Cherryland Middle School it is on the west side of building, close to ball field, there will be orange cones out.
2. The days and times of pickup are: Monday thru Friday, 11am to 1pm. We can give out more than one days worth of meals. Usually no more than three days worth, ie: on Friday, picking up for the weekend.
3. Volunteers will be delivering meals on Tuesdays and Fridays. As much as you do not want to leave your house, volunteers do not want to either. Pickup is the best way to get the meals. If you need delivery, email me at [email protected] , and we will figure it out.
4. Any child 18 and under is open to receive meals. We will give the meals to adults saying they are picking up for a child, if no child is present.
5. This is not dependent on being a district student, any child is open to receive meals
6. The meals follow the guidelines put forth by the USDA for nutritional content. Any further questions, feel free to reach out at the above email address and we are happy to help. Stay Safe.

COVID-19 update from Elk Rapids Harbor Days Board - April 19, 2020

Thank you everyone for the continued support and all that it brings to Harbor Days. The excitement expressed about the button design and reaching a 65 th year milestone is sincerely appreciated. The Harbor Days Board continues to look for guidance from the federal and state governments as we carefully consider Harbor Days 2020. We have been monitoring the situation closely. Any decisions made will be in the best interest of attendees and our partners. The festival itself, each activity offered, and all logistics will be contingent upon the required boundaries determined in the days ahead. For updates visit elkrapidsharbordays.org or Facebook. Elk Rapids Rotary Club contributes $6,000 to GTRCF’s Urgent Needs Fund

The Elk Rapids Rotary Club may not be meeting weekly as they normally do, but they are still doing good works for the community in this time of need.
On April 9, 2020, the club gave a $6,000 contribution to the Urgent Needs Fund run by the Grand Traverse Region Community Foundation (GTRCF.) According to GTRCF, the “Urgent Needs Fund was created to mobilize local giving and cross-sector community support efforts in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Funds will be granted to local organizations that are providing vital services to individuals and families across our five-county region who are being disproportionately impacted by the instability and economic consequences of the outbreak. Grant funding is currently prioritizing support for nonprofits who are providing immediate relief services.”
Local organizations who have already received Urgent Needs Fund grants include: Good Samaritan Family Services, Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan, Munson Patient Needs Fund, Northwest Michigan Food Coalition and the Women’s Resource Center among many others.
If YOU would like to donate to the GTRCF’s Urgent Needs Fund, you may donate on-line at: www.gtrcf.org/give/urgentneeds or mail a check to GTRCF at 233 Lake Avenue, Suite B, Traverse City, MI, 49684. Make check payable “Community Foundation” and write “Urgent Needs Fund” on the memo line.
