THE CHARLOTTE PROJECT
12/8, 8pm & 12/9, 5pm at The Magnes Jewish Museum,
2121 Allston Way, Berkeley, near BART station
"Gardez-les bien. C'est toute ma vie."
"Keep this safe. It is my whole life."
These were the words of 26-year-old German-Jewish artist Charlotte Salomon to a local doctor as she handed him a suitcase filled with 769 autobiographical paintings. It was 1943 in Villefranche-sur-Mer in the South of France. The paintings were indeed kept safe, and survived the war. Charlotte, however, did not.
The Charlotte Project, inspired by Salomon's"Leben? oder Theater?: Ein Singspiel" ("Life? or Theater?: A Song-Play"), examines the artist's life and personal struggles through storytelling, song, and of course, her paintings.
Ariela will be playing Paulinka BimBam (in real life, Paula Lindberg-Salomon) the famous Berliner opera singer who becomes Charlotte's stepmother and will be singing pieces from the classical canon as well as Yiddish folk songs, and more.
