MEET BIG SISTER TIFFANY

(MATCHED FOR A YEAR AND A HALF!)

What was the most memorable moment in your match?

Typically when Ja’Nayah and I go out, I do most of the talking. One evening we went to Cold Stone to use her gift card that she won from a BBBS event, and she talked to me the entire time! I was very surprised, but I enjoyed our conversation so much, and I appreciated her sharing a part of herself with me. Later that evening, Ja’Nayah shared a text saying, “I really enjoyed our time together”. This touched my heart and made me feel like being her Big Sister was meaningful.

What is your experience of being matched?

Having professionally worked with all age groups, age wasn’t a concern for me. When I met Ja’Nayah for the first time, we both had braces! I thought, "What were the chances of that!"

Once matched with Ja’Nayah, I thought it would be easier to communicate with a teenager; but such was not the case. It took some time for Ja’Nayah to trust me, but once she did, she talked more. After that, our times together were fun!

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2024 BIGS OF THE YEAR!

Congratulations to our 2024 Bigs of the Year, Big Sister Barbara Harper, and Big Brother Lamar Patterson. We are so grateful for your leadership and service as a Big! We would also like to share that Big Brother Lamar has won Big Brother of the Year for the State of North Carolina!

Let’s give our BOTY recipients a round of applause!!

A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT & CEO

Hello Bigs,

We were so excited to celebrate all of you during Mentoring Month. We had so much fun at the Celebrate Big event on January 26th at Heist Brewery. If you were not able to make it, know that we missed you!

During the evening, we recognized all of our Big Sister / Big Brother nominees and announced the agency’s Big Sister – Barbara Harper and Big Brother – Lamar Patterson of the Year. Our Big Brother of the Year, Lamar was selected by a Big Brothers Big Sisters statewide panel as the NC State Big Brother of the Year. His nomination will be sent to national where he may be selected as the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) Big Brother of the Year. The Big Brother Big Sister winners will be announced during the BBBSA national conference in Dallas, Texas in June.

During the celebration I shared with the Bigs what a mentor in our program is and what a mentor is not. Sometimes as Bigs, we feel obligated to be more than is required to support our Little and or their family. I hope this point of reference helps whenever you question am I doing enough or am I doing too much!

A Big is a /an:

  •  Supportive friend
  •  Positive role model
  •  Cheerleader
  •  Guide and trusted advisor
  •  Active listener/sounding board
  •  Provider of constructive feedback

A Big is not:

  • A parent
  • A teacher
  • A rescuer
  • A social worker
  • A judge
  • A psychologist or therapist

Spring is just around the corner! Hopefully, you can soon start to plan fun outdoor activities if you are a community based Big. Appreciate all of you and what you do for young people in our community! Keep up the good work!

Yours in Service to Youth,

Donna
