Answers to trivia questions in this issue:

#1: Hudsonite Burton D. Morgan, who died in 2003, held U.S. patent #4930500 for the self-adhesive bandage and patent #4867821 for the process for fabricating self-adhesive bandages. He founded or supported 50 companies and was a dynamic innovator in areas ranging from pressure-sensitive adhesives … to the cellophane used to package meats in supermarkets … to the “Hamburger Sizzler” (a metal disc developed in 1952 for cooking juicy burgers in the oven). Morgan’s legacy lives on through the Burton D. Morgan Foundation, located in downtown Hudson, which primarily supports entrepreneurial projects and programs locally and nationally.

#2: Water in Hudson comes from one of five different sources, depending on your location. (1) The largest part of Hudson, including about 2,300 customers in the central and southwest portions of the city, are served by a City of Hudson-owned water treatment plant on West Streetsboro Road that draws from five large underground wells before being filtered and treated. (2) Northern and eastern parts of Hudson receive water from the City of Akron, which sources its water from several surface reservoirs that are part of the Upper Cuyahoga River watershed. (3) A small section in the northeast corner of Hudson has water from the City of Cleveland, which draws it from Lake Erie. (4) A small portion on the southern border of Hudson is served by the City of Stow, which purchases its water from the City of Akron. (5) And some Hudson properties have their own groundwater wells.

#3: To guess at this answer, email us at celebratehudson@myhcf.org. A fabulous prize will be awarded to one randomly selected person who submits the correct answer.

#4: Abraham Lincoln stopped in Hudson on February 15, 1861, on his first inaugural whistlestop train trip from Springfield, IL, to Washington, D.C. More than 5,000 people gathered at the old Hudson Depot on South College Street to hear him speak from the rear platform of his train. The occasion is marked with a historic marker sign along the walking trail that runs behind the Hudson police station and the Rosewood Grill restaurant.

#5: In the early morning hours of April 28, 1892, a fire broke out in A.W. Lockhart’s Saloon on Main Street in Hudson and quickly spread to the entire block between the current Park Lane and Clinton Street. Many businesses were destroyed, including the popular Mansion House Hotel. Fortunately, the fire stopped at Clinton Street and those wooden buildings between Clinton Street and Owen Brown Street were spared. The burnt portion of Main Street was rebuilt in the manner we now know today.

#6: There are five cemeteries in Hudson – Draper Cemetery, Markillie Cemetery, O’Brien Cemetery, Olde Township Burying Ground and St. Mary Cemetery.

Where was Hudson’s original Acme grocery store located?

Acme opened a branch store in Hudson in 1913 at 140 North Main Street and operated there until relocating in 1963 to its current location in Acme Plaza on West Streetsboro Road. Today, 140 North Main Street is the home of Vignettes boutique and the Downtown/Uptown 140 restaurant and wine bar. Acme, founded in Akron in 1891, currently is celebrating its 135th anniversary. See below a photo of the original Acme store on Hudson's Main Street.

The winner of our March trivia contest is Michelle Little

To celebrate Acme’s long-standing presence in our community, Michelle's prize includes a reusable Acme shopping bag, along with:

  • A $50 Acme gift card
  • From the current Acme candy aisle, a bag of favorite candies that were new and innovative in the era when Acme came to Hudson in 1913.
  • Also from the current Acme candy aisle, a bag of favorite candies that were new and innovative in the era when Acme moved from Main Street to Acme Plaza in 1963.
