A Look Back to Recent Events

The Hudson Swing Marching Band plays the Star-Spangled Banner during the ceremonial flag raising during Hudson’s Memorial Day parade. A large and appreciative crowd in honor of America’s 250 birthday year expressed its appreciation for those who have sacrificed for our freedom.

Hudson Kiwanis honored local Power of the Pen (POP) winners who advanced to compete in the state competition at Ashland University. In POP, students in grades 7 and 8 are provided an outlet for creative writing and competing to test their skills against other talented writers. POP offers academic benefits and teaches students about empathy for others and the importance of sharing their own experiences. Storytelling is a powerful social tool and POP encourages young authors to use their talents to connect with others. Through this program, Kiwanis awarded nearly $20,000 in scholarships this year to nine Hudson graduating seniors.

Pictured here (left to right) are Seton Catholic School Power of the Pen Coach Alyssa Montoni, Seton students and state finalists Violet Green and Mairin Graf, Hudson Kiwanis member Richard Starr, Hudson Middle School student and state finalist Alyssa Hill (HMS finalist Ellie Monda is missing from the photo) and Middle School Coach Mike Fejes.

Answers to trivia questions in this issue:

#1: Neel Kashkari, an Akron native and 1990 graduate of Western Reserve Academy, currently serves as President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. In that role, he is one of 12 voting members of the Fed’s Open Market Committee for 2026. He previously served as Assistant U.S. Treasury Secretary and also ran for Governor of California.

#2: In 1990, there were 83 functioning pay phones in Hudson. They quickly became obsolete with the proliferation of cell phones. Today, you can find one remaining pay phone in the lobby of Barlow Community Center (41 South Oviatt St.) but it is not operational.

#3: To guess at this answer, email us at celebratehudson@myhcf.org. A fabulous prize will be awarded to a person whose guess is the correct. In the event of multiple correct answers, the winner will be selected in a random drawing. Even if you won previously, you have the opportunity to win again!

#4: Launched in 2002, members of Leadership Hudson have envisioned an impressive list of enduring projects, including the Hudson Farmers Market, Safety Town, Screen on the Green, State of Mind Hudson, downtown Hudson benches, the veterans memorial at Markille Cemetery and (currently) a new Hudson welcome sign on Veterans Way. Under sponsorship by The Clocktower Rotary Club of Hudson, Leadership Hudson is a nine-month program that immerses participants in the city’s operations, businesses and leadership. Every class develops its own unique projects to enhance the community.

#5: In 1880, Andrew Shively built a Carriage & Blacksmith Shop at that Main Street location. Horse-drawn passenger vehicles could be repaired there and needed parts purchased. It served Hudson’s needs for horse and wagon transportation for more than 50 years. Later, the building became an auto service center for Raymond Kilbourne’s Chevrolet dealership and was the garage and station for Hudson EMS. The building was converted to a bank in 1979.

#6: Some historical accounts say that Johnny Appleseed (John Chapman), a nurseryman and folk hero, planted a Rambo-variety apple tree in what is now The City of Hudson’s Trumbull Woods Park, 10357 Wellman Rd.

The answer from last month’s trivia contest (from our

May 12, 2026, issue):

In the May issue, we asked readers to submit their best answer to How many total businesses (of all types, with annual revenue of at least $1,000) are in Hudson and employ at least one other person in addition to the owner?

U.S. Census Bureau data for 2023 (the most current available) includes 858 firms in zip code 44236 that employ at least one person with an annual payroll of at least $1,000. Interestingly, the greatest concentration of companies in Hudson (136 of them) are classified as professional, scientific and technical services, followed by healthcare and social assistance (86 total), finance and insurance (81 total) and retail trade (78 total).

Moreover, an estimated 1,100 Hudsonites in 2025 were self-employed (without additional employees). This shows that Hudson is not only great for traditional businesses, but for the “gig economy” as well.

The winner of our May trivia contest was Dick Starr.

Dick is seen below showing off his prizes, which celebrate just a few of the retail business employers who serve the needs of our local community:

  • A unique Hudson map tote made in the USA especially for sale at Hudson General, 136 North Main St., Hudson. Inside the tote were $25 gift cards from:
  • Vignettes, a clothing and home décor boutique at 140 North Main St., Hudson;
  • Spice & Tea Exchange, which includes a hot and cold takeout tea bar at 94 First St., Hudson; and
  • Hollywood Feed, supplying pet foods, toys and supplies at 116 West Streetsboro Rd., Hudson
