The answer from last month’s trivia contest (from our
April 14, 2026, issue):
In the April issue, we asked readers to submit their best answer to Hudson Trivia Question #3: Where was the local football field where Pro Football Hall of Famer Dante Lavelli played home games as a star running back for Hudson High School in the 1930s?
During Dante Lavelli’s high school playing days, Hudson’s football field was located on the site we now know as First & Main. Before becoming a shopping mecca, this was the location of manufacturing company Morse Controls. And before that, it was a field for playing football and, during the summers, the site of a circus that set up in Hudson.
This football field was built in the 1930s by The American Legion Lee-Bishop Post 464, a veteran service organization that worked closely with the Hudson Community Service Association. It was among the first lighted football fields in Summit County. Thanks to the American Legion, those lights were transferred to the then-Hudson High School when it was able to build a stadium of its own.
Arguably the most famous football player ever to wear a Hudson uniform, Lavelli was especially known for his amazing ability to catch and control a football – earning him the nickname “Ol’ Gluefingers.” His Hudson High School team went undefeated for three seasons and won three county championships. After graduating Hudson in 1941 and playing briefly for Ohio State and serving in Europe with the U.S. Army, Lavelli joined the Cleveland Browns. He was an integral member of the Browns team that won seven league championships (between 1946 and 1955) during his 11-season pro career. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1975.
The winner of our March trivia contest was Mary Sogan.
Mary is seen below showing off her prizes. They included:
- Official Hudson Explorers drawstring bag, t-shirt and hat from the “Support Your School” section of Discount Drug Mart, 5863 Darrow Rd., Hudson
- In recognition of Dante Lavelli’s nickname of “Ol’ Gluefingers,” a $50 gift card from Hudson Ace Hardware, 5824 Darrow Rd., Hudson, which sells a wide variety of adhesive products. (Note: Despite Dante’s nickname, we do not recommend putting glue on your fingers!)
