| A Look Back to Recent Events | At the September 21 meeting of the Hudson Society of Artists, Alexandria Joliat, a self-taught mixed-media collage artist, illustrated how her process for arranging thousands of small, hand-cut fragments (a photomontage art called “painting with paper”) parallels a painter’s use of brushstrokes and color selections. | A Hudson tradition of placing fanciful fairy doors at businesses and residences around downtown was initiated by Destination Hudson and endures, to the delight of children and their families who stop to examine the creativity. This fairy door display can be seen on a downtown street. | Hudson has a comprehensive Community Events Calendar! | | Hudson Community Foundation hosts Hudson Happenings, an all-encompassing community events calendar created in partnership with Hudson City Schools, Hudson Library and the City of Hudson. View it online: https://events.hudsonhappenings.org/ | | Answers to trivia questions in this issue: | | #1: In 1974, rock band Kansas issued a self-titled album Kansas (its first release) with a cover showing militant abolitionist John Brown, who grew up in Hudson in the early 1800s. The album cover is an image of Brown as he is depicted in a mural entitled “Tragic Prelude” that is painted inside the Kansas State Capitol Building in Topeka. John Brown and his five sons were famously involved in a violent and bloody conflict between abolitionists and pre-slavery settlers in the State of Kansas in 1856. | | |
#2: U.S. Census data published in 2025 says, on average, 718 military veterans lived in Hudson between 2020 and 2024. (Please remember to thank and honor them for their service on Veterans Day – November 11.)
#3: To guess at this answer, email us at celebratehudson@myhcf.org. A fabulous prize will be awarded to a person whose guess is correct. In the event of multiple correct answers, the winner will be selected in a random drawing. Even if you have won previously, you have the opportunity to win again. So don’t hold back.
#4: The Loomis Observatory on the campus of Western Reserve Academy was built in 1838 and is the oldest astronomical observatory in the United States still in its original location. Professor Elias Loomis was a prominent astronomer in the 19th Century and the observatory was built as a condition of his coming to teach at Western Reserve College. While the facility is no longer used for observing, it is open to the public only on rare occasions.
#5: Apparently, Rockefeller loved the feel of Hudson, and the sound of our Clocktower in particular. As late as 1915, Rockefeller had his chauffeur drive him to Hudson from Cleveland shortly before noon on a summer day. Rockefeller would walk to a park bench, sit in the shade and leave after the noontime Clocktower chimes sounded.
#6: Lake Forest Country Club opened in 1929. At the time, it was the longest golf course in Ohio.

The answer from last month’s trivia contest (from our
September 15, 2026, issue):
In the September issue, we asked readers to submit their best answer to: What was the original purpose of the building that now houses the Rosewood Grill restaurant and several offices at 36 E. Streetsboro Rd?
The correct answer: In 1854, Edgar B. Ellsworth (father of famed Hudson historical figure James W. Ellsworth) built this structure to house the Hudson Planing and Lumber Company in expectation of a building boom associated with emerging railroad traffic. Over time, it operated as a chair factory, a flour mill and a lumber and supply company. Eventually, the space was renovated primarily to accommodate Turner’s Mill restaurant, and now, Rosewood Grill.
The winner of our September trivia contest was John Embree.
John is seen below with his prizes:
-
In honor of the history of lumber milling in Hudson, a distinctive wooden puzzle of Hudson’s clocktower created by (and available for sale at) AR Workshop Hudson, 116 W. Streetsboro Rd. (in the Acme Plaza); and
-
To honor the landmark building featured in our trivia question, a $100 gift card to Rosewood Grill, 36 E. Streetsboro Rd.
