2022 International Women's Day #BreakTheBias

To celebrate this year's International Women's Day on March 8, 2022, we decided to put together a newsletter to highlight some of the great events and opportunities that are available for women and girls across this country and highlight some initiatives that are aiming to get more women and girls involved in Football in all roles.

With this year's theme being "Break The Bias" we wanted to take the opportunity to celebrate women's achievement in football within Canada and raise awareness of all the great things that are occurring across the country and acknowledge how far we still have to go for equity and equality in football.

WWCFL Back for 2022

The Western Women's Canadian Football League is looking to get back onto the gridiron and finally hold its 10th season this spring after a two-year delay.

Players, coaches, team staff and fans of the league's seven teams are eagerly anticipating a return to action when the season kicks off with Week 1 games on Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1.

"All of our teams have been hard at work over the last two years adapting and modifying their training with the goal of eventually getting back onto the field and competing in the sport that they love," said WWCFL President Jaime Lammerding. "It will be exciting to see their efforts and dedication pay off come game day."

The WWCFL is made up of seven teams across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, including the Calgary Rage, Edmonton Storm, Lethbridge Steel, Saskatoon Valkyries, Regina Riot, Manitoba Fearless and Winnipeg Wolfpack. The Rage, Storm and Steel make up the Western Conference, while the Valkyries, Riot, Fearless and Wolfpack compete in the Prairie Conference.

Each of the teams are currently holding practices, but new players are welcome to come out and give the sport a try. No experience necessary.

New League for Women's Tackle Football in Central Canada

The Central Canadian Women's Football League CCWFL launched on June 21 2021 with the objective of giving an opportunity for all women to play competitive tackle football in Quebec and Ontario. Until this past summer, there was no structure in place for women athletes in these provinces to play the sport that they love. The CCWFL is led by former players and other collaborators who are passionate and dedicated about breaking the bias for women in football, whether they wish to play, coach, ref or manage teams and league operations.

The collaboration of the two provincial sports organizations is accelerating the pace towards the development and inclusion of women in football in these two provinces: “Working with Football Quebec and Football Ontario on this project is key. We are also greatly inspired by the existing women’s league in Canada, the WWCFL and MWFL that have paved the way” underlines Andréanne Dupont-Parent, the league commissioner.

The CCWFL was able to help organize development camps this past fall in Ottawa, Montreal and Lévis (near Quebec City), to help recruiting efforts and to showcase women’s football. This first year will focus on growing the pool of athletes, strengthening the teams, and building relationships with the local football community. The inaugural season will take place in the Spring of 2022 with the first game scheduled for May 14. The 3 teams committed for this year are the Capital Rebels from Ottawa, the Montreal Blitz, and the Quebec Phoenix. Their recruitment camps have just started, and registrations are still open for athletes with or without tackle football experience. Support football for all and break the bias!
