4 Meaningful Ways to Celebrate Juneteenth with Your Kids

Juneteenth is a celebration of the day in 1865 when word of Abraham Lincoln’s signing of the Emancipation Proclamation — which had been signed two years prior and freed all enslaved people — made its way to Texas.
A combination of the words “June” and “Nineteenth,” Juneteenth was first made an official Texas state holiday in 1979, but since then, people have begun to honor the day (also called Emancipation Day) all around the United States. Read more about this important holiday...

Outdoor Physical Activities for Toddlers

Get Outside and Get Active With Your Toddler

Unlike bigger kids who should aim for 60 minutes of physical activity per day, toddlers need three hours of active playtime every day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). 1 Try these outdoor physical activities with your toddler to help meet those needs. Each one may only last 10 minutes or so (thanks to toddlers' short attention spans), so be prepared to rotate through a bunch of them during an outdoor play session.
Toddlers making friends

Watching toddlers making friends for the first time can be a delight. It’s good for your young child to start learning how to play well with other children. This lays the groundwork for later social skills.

Toddlers making friends: what to expect
When children are very young – aged 1-2 years – they generally play with the other children around them, rather than choosing a ‘best’ friend. Many of your child’s playmates will be the children of people you know – for example, friends, family or parents you meet at playgroup.
Toddlers vary in how social they are. Some are naturally more sociable and can manage more playmates, whereas others are more comfortable with fewer playmates. As your child gets older and develops verbal skills, he’s likely to start telling you who he likes playing with.

Kids' Craft to Celebrate Juneteenth
Many families decorate their homes with red banners and feature red foods in their Juneteenth holiday picnics and barbecues.Red stands for the blood that people shed as slaves.

Make a Paper Chain to remember the important ideas celebrated on the Juneteenth holiday!

Supplies:
  • Red construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Crayons or markers
  • Glue stick

1. On the piece of paper, use a ruler to mark off 1-inch strips. Cut the strips.
2. With a crayon or marker, print words on the strips that are important to remember on Juneteenth. Some ideas are "freedom," "hopes," "slavery," and "goals."
3. Form one of the strips into a circle and glue the ends together.
4. Form the next circle and loop it into the first circle. Glue the ends. Repeat until all of the strips are connected. Make the chain as long as you want by adding more strips.
5. Share the words on your chain, and tell friends why they are important ideas to remember!
