Veterans Book Club: Wendell Affield
By Rhonda Culbertson
On
Tuesday, April 18, the Veterans Book Club and the History Department will be hosting author Wendell Affield for a discussion of his memoirs,
Muddy Jungle Rivers: A River Assault Boat Cox'n's Memory Journey of His War in Vietnam and Return Home.
It will be held on the 3rd floor bridge area in Wiekamp Hall beginning at 5:00.
Mr. Affield was a teenager when he enlisted in the Navy. He was sent to Vietnam and piloted a troop transport carrier through the rivers near the coast. An ambush resulted in serious injuries to him and others on the carrier. He was sent home for recovery and therapy, and kept his painful memories and experiences to himself. In retirement, he enrolled in university writing and history classes and began the 10-year process of writing his memoirs. I recently had the chance to interview Mr. Affield and the story can be found on the library's
blog.
Tom Murphy, IU South Bend History professor, met the author while he was teaching at Bemidji State University. He was struck by Mr. Affield's story, and the gripping account he wrote of his time in Vietnam. Dr. Murphy uses the book in his American History curriculum, and has given students opportunities to contact the author. Veterans in particular have found these interactions very meaningful.
The event is free and the public is encouraged to attend. Copies of the book are available for checkout at the library, or by contacting Vicki Bloom (
vdbloom@iusb.edu) For more information, or to RSVP, please contact Rhonda Culbertson, (
rculbert@iusb.edu).
The Veterans Book Club aims to better integrate veteran students into university life as well as enlighten the faculty, administrators, staff and other students about the challenges and strengths that these students bring to campus. It also is open to community members interested in veterans' issues. It is made possible through a generous donation from
Jerry and Dorene Hammes.

Congratulations, Susan Jacobs: 2017 Library Alumna of the Year
Congratulations to Susan Jacobs, who was named the 2017 Library Alumna of the Year. Jacobs was a student worker in Archives and currently serves as Assistant Director of the
Alpena County Public Library in Michigan. Jacobs was part of a group of students featured in the Spring 2011 issue of the library newsletter for their work on "
Team Archives," a group of student workers mentored by Campus Archivist Alison Stankrauff.
This is the
second year of the campus honoring almuni from each school on campus and the library. The library's 2016 honoree was Seianna Giden, who leads "A is for Apple Pie," a food-based interactive education program for children. Giden was also featured in
Foundations magazine as one of eight siblings to attend IUSB (three of whom also worked at the Schurz Library).
