Bicentennial Talk on April 4

Please join us for a lively conversation on the origins of the state nickname, with Professor Emeritus of History Dr. Pat Furlong, on Monday, April 4, 5:30 p.m. in Wiekamp Hall, room 1001. This presentation is part of the Next Indiana Bookshelf grant  the library received from the Indiana Humanities Council in celebration of the state's bicentennial and is free and open to the public.
Veterans Book Club

The next meeting of the Veterans Book Club will be on  Monday, April 11, 5:30-7:00 pm in the University Grill, Fireside Room.

We'll be discussing  Fire and Forget: Short Stories from the Long War, edited by Roy Scranton and Matt Gallagher, (Schurz Library - PS648.W34 F57 2013) with a focus on two stories:

o "Redeployment" by Phil Klay, 2014 National Book Award Winner in Fiction
o "Tips for a Smooth Transition" by Siobhan Fallon (providing a perspective of an Army wife)

We encourage you to bring family members, and to share this opportunity with veterans you may know. Supervised activities for children will be available. Please RSVP to Rhonda Culbertson at  rculbert@iusb.edu and mention the ages and any food allergies of children who may attend.

The Veterans Book Club  aims to better integrate veteran students into university life as well as enlighten the faculty, administrators, staff and other students about the challenges and strengths that these students bring to campus.  It also is open to community members interested in veterans issues. It is made possible through a generous donation from Jerry and Dorene Hammes

Scholarship and Library Prize Winners Celebrated April 12

Congratulations to Y-Binh Ngo, winner of the Michele C. Russo Library Student Worker Scholarship, and Chelsea Ray-Dye, winner of the Library Prize for Undergraduate Research. Help us celebrate their awards at a reception on Tuesday, April 12, at 10 a.m. in the Library's 5th floor atrium.

"Her skill set and personality make her an essential part of the team," notes Circulation Supervisor Kathy Plodowski. "She seeks commonality with her colleagues, strives to understand and extend compassion to any struggling co-workers, and displays friendliness and helpfulness to patrons."

Ray-Dye, a history major and recent graduate, won the Library Prize for her paper '"Let Me Die in My Footsteps": South Bend, Indiana and the Fallout Shelter Problem during the Cold War Era.' She submitted the paper for Dr. Jonathan Nashel's course, HIST-J495: The Cold War At Home.
