Celebrate National Communicate With Your Kids Day!
Our own children can sometimes be the toughest to understand. Whether you’re having a difficult time bonding or you feel like you just can’t communicate with them effectively, working to create a strong connection with your children is crucial. It is National Communicate With Your Kids Week, and to celebrate, we’re dishing out some resources we have found helpful when it comes to building a better relationship (and having fun!) with your child.

One way for your child to understand you better is by communicating details and stories from the past. Above you see The Manely Firm's Founding Attorney Michael Manely pictured with his youngest son Ben and legendary U.S. Representative, Civil Rights Leader and famed author, Mr. John Lewis. Among many amazing accomplishments, Mr. Lewis was an award-winning author that was known by many to put pen-to-paper to communicate stories and pass on information in well-articulated form. He is photographed here congratulating Michael on his December 5, 2012 argument before The United States Supreme Court. Read below for details on Michael's historic, unanimous victory before The Court and the continued legacy it holds today.

As parents, you want your child to feel comfortable talking to you about anything. But it’s easier said than done. Instead of telling your children you will always be there for them, show them. You can implement other strategies and actions to drive this statement home further. By being a sounding board, focusing on quality time, and avoiding judgment, your child will eventually feel comfortable turning to you in their time of need.

The most important relationship in your child’s life is with you, the parent. You teach them right from wrong, how to establish proper boundaries, and give them tools to succeed. Building a foundation upon love and security is vital if you want your relationship with them to thrive. These positive-parenting techniques will strengthen the bond between you and your children and help them blossom into amazing adults. Pictured here is The Manely Firm's Marietta Paralegal Kim Hollomon's three children many years ago. They are all now in either high school or college and like many parents, Kim feels the days can be long but the years are very short. Kim says, "It is important to me that they stay close as they age and mature into their own lives. We work hard to build traditions and include family time together whenever possible."

We all love to look at all the Christmas decor and lights in our neighborhoods. But one person outdid himself by creating an extraordinary Christmas light show in front of his home. And in 2020, Tom BetGeorge uploaded his show for everyone to enjoy. With over 4 million views, this video will leave you in awe.

As we kick off the month of December, The Manely Firm enjoyed pausing for a moment and reflecting on a very proud moment for Founding Attorney Michael Manely. While much time went into his case preparation, his excellent argument and delivery led to the unanimous victory that was soon to be...

The day was December 5, 2012. Ten years ago Founding Attorney Michael Manely made his winning argument before The U.S. Supreme Court. Chafin v. Chafin ultimately remedied the split between U.S. Jurisdictions regarding whether or not parents had standing in U.S. courts if their child was removed from the country. A lot was at stake, Michael was brilliant. He ignored those who advised him to be unresponsive to questions from the bench that didn’t fit his narrative of the case. He took the advice of those who advised him to be an educator for The Court, who infrequently handle family law matters.

A few months later, Michael learned he had won that argument unanimously. Had he lost, U.S. parents would only have recourse in the foreign country where the child was taken, not in U.S. courts. Thanks to Michael Manely, they do.

You can listen to Michael argue the case here:

Communication is important in most every aspect of our lives. When dealing with conflict or stress, having your wishes declared in advance is the most important type of communication you can have. Read below for more on how a divorce can effect your estate and what you need to do to be prepared.

Going through a divorce is a time of re-evaluating for most individuals. So now is a great opportunity to review your Last Will and Testament, Healthcare Directive, and Power of Attorney. Statistically, most Americans do not have a Will. If you are in that camp it is not too late. If you do not have an estate plan in place, now is the time to have an attorney draft these documents for you.

O.C.G.A. § 53-4-49 provides that all Will provisions leaving property to a former spouse are automatically revoked when the final divorce decree is issued. Your soon to be ex-spouse will be treated as predeceasing you under your current Will. However, many individuals want to update their wills following a divorce to remove their former spouse from the Will completely. Even though Georgia law automatically revokes the property distributions to an ex-spouse, it is advisable to update your estate plan following all major life events, including a divorce.
