Hope and Homes:

294 Families Apply for a Place to Call Their Own

This year, Sandhills Habitat for Humanity hosted its annual open application session—and once again, the overwhelming response underscores the urgent need for affordable housing in our community.

Qualifications:

We received 294 applications from families and individuals seeking the opportunity to partner with Habitat and build a better future. Each application tells a story—of hard work, perseverance, and a deep desire for a safe and stable place to call home. After a thorough review process, 20 applicants have been selected to move forward to the home visit stage, where we’ll get to know their families better and assess their current living conditions.

While we celebrate the opportunity to move these 20 families closer to homeownership, we are also profoundly aware of the 274 families we were unable to serve this year. The demand for affordable, quality housing continues to grow, outpacing our ability to respond without increased community support.

You can help change this.

With your support, we can build more homes and offer more hope. Every donation—whether financial, in-kind, or through volunteering—directly impacts families striving to break the cycle of poverty and create a more stable future. A gift to Sandhills Habitat isn’t just a donation. It’s drywall and doors. It’s playgrounds and porches. It’s security, dignity, and opportunity.

As we look to expand our capacity in the coming year, we invite you to join us in this mission. Together, we can say “yes” to more families and take a step closer to a community where everyone has a decent place to live.

Donate today. Build tomorrow.

Habitat Voices in Action

Your action matters!

For millions of Americans, the dream of homeownership is slipping further away. Skyrocketing housing costs, stagnant wages, and a lack of affordable options have made it nearly impossible for many hardworking families to buy a home and build generational stability.

At Sandhills Humanity, we see the impact of this crisis every day. Families are spending more than half their income on rent, living in overcrowded or unsafe conditions, or being forced to move again and again in search of something affordable.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. Congress has the power to make bold, systemic investments in affordable housing—investments that would open the door to homeownership for millions more Americans. By supporting policies that increase housing supply, expand access to down payment assistance, and invest in nonprofit housing developers like Habitat, lawmakers can be part of the solution.

Everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to call home. It’s time to raise our voices and urge Congress to act.

4th Annual Apostles Build Fundraiser

This month’s Faith Moment highlights the 4th Annual Apostles Build fundraiser dinner, graciously hosted by St. Joseph of the Pines retirement community. What began as a volunteer’s idea has now raised over $50,000 to help build an Apostles Build Home. Most funds come from residents purchasing seats at the dinner, with additional support from generous sponsors.

Among them, ophthalmologists Dr. Andrew Coggin and Dr. Anton Vlasov stepped forward after a patient asked Dr. Coggin to “pray us out” during an appointment—leading to a heartfelt donation. Christian Women in Leadership also returned as a sponsor, aligning their mission of developing servant leaders with Habitat’s own values.

Local businesses continue to give back as well. Aprille Ostert of Ostert PT supports through her commitment to community care, while Stifel Pinehurst Financial Group once again made a generous contribution, with Bill Eastman noting, “The welfare of our clients comes first, much like Habitat’s mission of building lives.”

We are deeply grateful to the St. Joseph of the Pines team, its residents, and all our sponsors for making this annual event such a blessing for our homeowner partners.

Annual Repair Application Session

Start Monday, Sept. 1st

We're excited to announce that Sandhills Habitat will begin accepting Repair Program applications starting Monday, September 1st! If you or someone you know is a homeowner in need of critical home repairs—such as roofing, windows, HVAC, wheelchair ramps, or other essential improvements—our Repair Program may be able to help.

A Fond Farewell to “Your Highness”

Sandhills Habitat celebrated and shed quite a few tears as we bid farewell to one of our most dedicated ReStore volunteers, Nancy — lovingly known to all as “Your Highness.” After giving more than 5,000 volunteer hours, Nancy’s impact on our mission and our community is truly immeasurable.

Nancy first joined the ReStore team with a simple desire to help, but she quickly became the smiling face and warm welcome that customers came to know and love at the cashier’s counter. With her trademark humor, her generous heart, and yes, a little regal flair, she brought joy to every shift. Many regular shoppers stopped by not just to browse, but to see Nancy, whose quick wit and kind words made the ReStore feel more like family than a store.

Over the years, Nancy helped thousands of customers, supported her fellow volunteers, and reminded everyone that the ReStore is more than a place to shop — it’s a place that builds hope. While we are sad to see her step away, her legacy of kindness and connection will continue to echo through the ReStore aisles.

Thank you, Nancy, for your heart, your humor, and your “royal” presence. You may be leaving the cashier’s counter, but you’ll always be part of the Habitat family.

From the construction site to the ReStore, the office, the boardroom, and every committee in between — our volunteers are the heartbeat of Habitat. Thanks to you, we are well on track to meet our 2025 goal! Every hour you give has a ripple effect: raising vital funds, supporting operations, and helping put the hammers in hands that build safe, affordable homes for families in the Sandhills.

Want to make an even bigger impact? Invite a friend, neighbor, or co-worker to join you. When people see Habitat in action, they believe in it — and we promise, there’s no better volunteer experience in the Sandhills!

It's a fun opportunity to meet like-minded friends who support affordable housing. Thursday, September 18th at 5:00 pm, you may learn about Habitat's volunteer opportunities. Whether you enjoy the outdoors and hands-on construction or working in the ReStore, we can custom-fit an experience that you will find rewarding and fun!

We know volunteer opportunities are abundant in Moore County. We strive to make your time a rewarding and beneficial experience at Sandhills Habitat.

No prior experience is needed—just a willingness to help and a heart for service. Join us today and see how you can make a difference. Together, we can build more than houses—we can build hope, stability, and brighter futures.
