"I am a 26 y.o. artist based in Chapel Hill, NC. My art form of choice is balanced-rock sculpture. All of my sculptures are comprised solely of rocks: there is no glue, wire or rods. Because of this, the sculptures are always temporary: they last anywhere from a few seconds to a few days.

Fruchtenicht Honey
Americans as they grow up and mature may move through a succession of jobs: lawn mowing or baby sitting, then a stint at a cash register, then on to a trade or profession. Worker honey bees have an analogous but more complex progression as they grow up and grow old.
From birth to age two or three they clean cells. Then their mandibular glands become active and then from three days old to about ten they manufacture royal jelly to feed larvae and the queen. From age ten twenty days they may manufacture wax and build comb, receive and ripen nectar, and store pollen from incoming foragers. From ages ten to twenty-five they begin duties outside the hive: guarding the entrance, carrying dead bees and debris from the hive, and lastly foraging for pollen and nectar. This last they may do this from about twelve to forty-five days at about which time they make their last flight. In the active season, a worker lives about six weeks and then they literally work themselves to death — no gold watch, no pension — they just don’t come home from that last trip. You can tell an elder worker by the loss of body hairs and tattered wing tips. They have contributed their small iota to the survival of the colony.

** FARM NEWS:

Organic sweet potatoes on our family farm?... Never before until this year!  And did Mario grow the most delicious crop of potatoes and in abundance in our certified organic, rich garden soils.
We will be offering gift boxes starting this week in 10 lb. and 20 lb. boxes... all $2 per lb.... in addition to potatoes by the lb. at the farm stand Saturday. A "curing" house was built this summer on the farm... so the potatoes could be "cooked or cured" to enhance their natural sweetness. Immediately after being dug, they were placed in this high humidity room at 85 degrees F for ten days to "cure." The skins thickened and they are sweeter and more shelf stable. Now, they should be kept around 50-55 degrees F until consumed. What a learning experience!

The organic strawberry plants have all been planted ... hopefully you will be able to enjoy berries next spring. Another item we will be offering for two markets only... are THANKSGIVING wreaths.. made with boxwood from around the old farmhouse, red peppers, fragrant holly, and the magnificent blooms from the greenhouse yellow and orange marigolds.  Pre-order your wreath for Saturday, Nov. 20th or Tues., Nov. 23rd delivery... such an attractive way to greet family and friends to your home for Thanksgiving. (see pic)

It is not too early to be thinking about ordering your beautiful greenery holiday wreaths... each meticulously made by Mario from greenery on the farm. We will have two sizes.. small ($45) or large ($55), starting with the first delivery on Tuesday, November 23rd. A sign-in sheet is at our check-out table on Saturday's... reserve yours now.

Thank you for your continued support of our Century Family Farm!

Even though some of us are still wearing shorts and T-shirts, it is cool enough these days for the rest of us to be wearing our Durham Hoodie. Warm, colorful, stylish, and in touch with the city. Also available on special order. We also have long-sleeved T-shirts for children and adults. AND BY THE WAY, we are happy to do special holiday orders. Colors, sizes, designs to your specifications. And like many others in this crazy world, some of the shirt sizes, dye colors, silkscreen ink, left-handed smokeshifters, etc., that we need to make that happen are sitting in ships off the California coast waiting to be unloaded. Because even though we deal with domestic companies, some of the supplies our suppliers need have to come from far-off places, and thus, we are subject to some of the breaks in the global supply chain that everyone else has do deal with. Which is a long way of saying that you should get your order in early.

Wild Scallions
Wild Scallions Farm will be at market with some great fall produce including: potatoes, butternut squash, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, bok choy, super sweet hakurei turnips, daikon radish, green tomatoes, and sun chokes. We'll also have a limited number of fresh flower bouquets, bunches of eucalyptus, and the start of our holiday wreaths.

All our produce is sustainably grown for healthful foods from healthy fields!

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

GUEST VENDORS
Full Flower Herbs
Hey friends!
We’re back with the usual suspects plus a new batch of our newest creation, Clean Up Crew Oxmel.

The Clean Up Crew is here to help cleanse and circulate the blood, helping to reduce inflammation, while tickling your taste buds. A sweet and zesty blend in honey and vinegar, the crew consists of turmeric, stinging nettle, burdock, and chipotle pepper. Vinegar makes an excellent solvent for minerals and prebiotic qualities, meaning the herbs nourish the beneficial microbes in your gut. The predominating flavors are smokey-spicy, balanced with sweet and sour.

Come and taste a sample!

See you soon!
