Celebrating Occupational Therapy Month

Each April, we proudly celebrate Occupational Therapy Month, a time to recognize the vital role Occupational Therapists (OTs) and Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTAs) play in helping individuals live meaningful, independent, and fulfilling lives.

Occupational Therapy is rooted in a simple but powerful idea: participation in everyday activities—also known as “occupations”—is essential to health and well-being. Whether it’s helping a child succeed in the classroom, supporting an adult returning to work after an injury, or enabling an disabled or older adult to remain safely independent at home, occupational therapy empowers people across their lifespan to do the things that matter most to them.

They can be found working in a wide range of settings, including hospitals, outpatient clinics, schools, homes, and community-based programs. They address physical, cognitive, emotional, and sensory challenges through personalized, evidence-based interventions. Occupational therapy takes a holistic, client-centered approach to care. From adapting environments and teaching new skills to building confidence and resilience.

This month is also an opportunity to highlight the creativity, compassion, and dedication of our occupational therapy team. Their work often happens behind the scenes, yet its impact is felt every day—in regained independence, improved quality of life, and meaningful progress towards personal goals. OTs and OTAs collaborate closely with individuals, families, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure care is both effective and empowering.

As we celebrate Occupational Therapy Month, we invite everyone to take a moment to thank occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants who make a difference in the lives of so many. Their commitment to promoting health and supporting independence truly embodies the heart of occupational therapy.

Germ of the Month

Giardia

Kristel Mattice; RN, MSN

Giardia duodenalis, or Giardia, is a parasitic disease that is commonly spread through water sources that are infected. More than 1 million people each year become impacted by illness related to this parasite. Symptoms include diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps, and dehydration that last up to 6 weeks. This germ is spread through water sources, food, or surfaces that become contaminated with Giardia germs which exist in fecal matter. Most commonly, it's contracted by swallowing water that has been infected with the germ, such as when swimming. Children under the age of 4 years are the most frequently impacted by this disease.

Tips to avoid this parasite include avoiding contaminated or unclean water sources and known infected persons.
