ESF Launches Indigenous Writer Residency Program at Cranberry Lake

Four indigenous writers will participate in a new residency program at ESF’s Cranberry Lake Biological Station this summer. Through the Indigenous Writer Residency Program, each writer will spend three weeks at CLBS, located in the heart of the Adirondack Park on the ancestral lands of the Mohawk Nation of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, writing and sharing their craft with students, faculty, staff, and the community.

ESF Wins SUNY Award for Excellence in Supporting Online Students

ESF was recognized by the State University of New York (SUNY) for excellence in supporting online students. The Online Student Support award was presented to ESF’s “Professionals in Sustainability” webinar series as part of the College’s online Sustainability Management Bachelor of Science program. 

Camp Fire Conservation Fund Honors ESF’s Dr. Jacqueline Frair with the Peter Roemer Award

Dr. Jacqueline Frair has been honored by the Camp Fire Conservation Fund with the Peter Roemer Award. The award recognizes Dr. Frair’s dedication and lifetime of work in the field of conservation. This is only the fourth time this award has been presented since its inception in 2007.

ESF Research Featured on Journal Cover

Drs. Gyu Leem and Chang Geun Yoo made the cover of RSC Energy’s Sustainable Energy & Fuels Journal for their article - A perspective on the evolution and journey of different types of lithium-ion capacitors: mechanisms, energy-power balance, applicability, and commercialization - with Dr. Jae-Joon Lee on how woody waste converts to alternative petrochemical using sustainable solar energy.

They provided fun and interactive activities related to pollinators and recycling using games, pointed questions, and live bees. UVA Remote Sensing Students, Dr. Bahram Salehi

Shout out to students from the spring UAV remote sensing class who attended the STRATUS 2023 (UAV Remote Sensing) conference in Rochester in May. And kudos to Dr. Bahram Salehi in the Department of Environmental Resources Engineering for co-chairing the conference. 

 

STRATUS is an annual UAV (drone) conference bringing together academia, government, and industry to share their latest findings in the area of UAV applications, algorithms, and hardware development. This year, there were nearly 100 attendees with more than 30 technical presentations from the U.S., Canada, Germany, and Norway, along with three keynotes from the USDA, Purdue University, and FAA and seven world leader companies in UAV as sponsors and exhibitors. 

Celebrate with ESF at the CNY Pride Parade Saturday 

Join ESF in marching proudly in support of the LGBTQIA+ community at the CNY Pride Parade! Students, faculty, staff, and their families are invited to join us.

 

Saturday, June 10 | 10:15 a.m. line-up | 11 a.m. start time | Inner Harbor

 

ESF will be walking in the parade, but arrangements can be made for people who would love to participate but need access to a driver. If you’re interested in marching, please email Chief Diversity Officer Danushi Fernando

 

Represent ESF by wearing ESF gear and feel free to decorate yourself — and your family — in rainbows, sequins, feathers, and glitter! We’ll have green ESF flags for you to wave and a large ESF banner to show ESF Pride.

 

Participants should arrive at the Solar Street parking lot (between Bear Street and Hiawatha Boulevard) by 10:15 a.m. After the parade, stay for the Pride Festival featuring entertainment, activities for youth and families, food, drinks, and vendors at the Inner Harbor. All are welcome!

Stop and Smell the Roses in Thornden Park 🌹

Everything’s coming up roses in Thornden Park and Rose Day is the perfect time to stop and smell the roses!


Wednesday, June 14 I noon – 3 p.m. I EM Mills Rose Garden, Thornden Park



Rose Day is an annual celebration when the roses are at or near peak bloom. The historic garden, which turns 100 next year, is home to thousands of roses including rare Old Garden Roses and modern roses of many varieties. It is considered one of the best public rose gardens in the nation and serves as a demonstration of design and horticulture. The garden also serves as a sort of learning lab for ESF students and is a place our students regularly perform community service.

Join ESF alumni, staff, and current graduate students for an evening of mingling at Harvey’s Garden! Harvey’s is a new beer hall & food truck park on Water Street in Syracuse. 


Thursday, June 22 I 5:30-7:30 p.m. I Harvey’s Garden, 1200 E. Water St.


Visit with friends, meet ESF’s talented graduate students, and enjoy a wall full of CNY’s best local craft beers plus food from the Bold Coast Lobster truck. The $10 entry fee covers two drink tickets. Food must be purchased individually. Pre-registration is required.

Nominate Graduate of Distinction

Do you know an outstanding ESF alumnus who deserves to be recognized for their achievements? Nominate them for a 2023 Graduate of Distinction Award, which is presented at December Commencement.

 

The ESF Alumni Association is seeking nominations in three categories:

 

  • Lifetime Achievement: Alumni who have or will soon end their active careers
  • Notable Achievement: Alumni who are in the early to mid-point of their careers
  • Incipiens Quercu: “Beginning Oak" for alumni who have graduated within the last decade or so demonstrating their commitment to ESF's environmental stewardship through their professional and/or volunteer work

Nominations can also be submitted on paper to the Graduate of Distinction Award Committee, c/o the Alumni Office, 219 Bray Hall.
