Silver City Clay Festival – From the Earth

The Silver City Clay Festival returns July 22-28. Every July, artists, collectors, educators, and families gather for a week-long series of events to explore clay, a material that knows no boundaries. This festival seeks ceramic artwork that utilizes this elemental material in any context or form and exemplifies the vast potential of ceramics. This exhibition welcomes artwork that embraces the traditions of clay making, represents contemporary interpretations of the medium and pushes the boundaries of this essential material that comes from the ground below our feet. There are a variety of workshops, exhibitions, and a maker’s market. Whether you’re an artist or an admirer, don’t miss this year’s Clay Festival.

Ah, Summer

Summer is a great time to explore in and around Silver City. In addition to amazing galleries, shops and restaurants, there’s also a downtown walking tour of the historic buildings where you can learn why Silver City was “built to last.” Silver City sits at the edge of the Gila Wilderness which is an outdoor enthusiast’s ideal playground. Be sure to check with local authorities on any restrictions that may be in place. And don’t forget to look up at night for incredible dark sky views just outside the city.

Reel in the fun at the Gila River

The Gila National Forest contains many miles of streams that provide both cold and warm water fishing opportunities. Both the Gila River and the San Francisco River along with their many tributaries are located within the forest. One of the main advantages of fishing in the Gila region is the variety of fish you can catch. Trout, catfish, and smallmouth bass are among the fish you can find. As an important part of the planning process, you should check which local fish are classed as being endangered or threatened. The Gila Trout is an example of a species that’s one of the rarest in the country, with efforts being made to introduce it back into streams and reservoirs.
