By the People, For the People: A Black Panther Party Celebration

Saturday, June 14 | 12 - 4 pm


Explore the enduring legacy of the Black Panther Party at a powerful community event marking the grand opening of the new exhibit "Revolutionary Grain: Celebrating the Spirit of the Black Panthers in Portraits and Stories."


Featuring:

  • Presentations by Emory Douglas, Social Justice Artist and former Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party, anRevolutionary Grain photographer Susanna Lamaina
  • Panel discussion with former Black Panther Party members Billy X Jennings, Ericka Huggins, Malik Edwards, and Gayle “Asali” Dickson
  • Live music by Bob Jones and the Chosen Few & DJ Abs1er
  • Line dancing with Tina B. and the Sacramento Soul Line Dancers
  • Food & drinks for purchase from Soul Ona Roll and Urban Roots Brewery
  • Family-friendly games and crafts, including postcard making and temporary tattoos


Tickets are on sale now for $8 and advance registration is recommended. Free for Museum members and children 12 and under.

"Revolutionary Grain: Celebrating the Spirit of the Black Panthers in Portraits and Stories"

In powerful portraits and personal stories, Revolutionary Grain presents former Black Panthers who continue to make a difference in their communities as lawyers, social workers, teachers, and political activists. 


Photographer Susanna Lucia Lamainas contemporary portraits of former Black Panthers give a glimpse into their lives and careers after they left the Party. The exhibition is a compelling look at the enduring legacies of rank-and-file members who changed history and dedicated their lives to community service.

"Mission Gráfica: Reflecting a Community in Print"

Experience four decades of powerful activist printmaking in Mission Gráfica: Reflecting a Community in Print, a striking exhibition that showcases the rich legacy of Mission Gráfica, a renowned community print center in San Francisco. Featuring 42 vibrant screenprints from influential artists such as Carmen Lomas Garza, Rupert Garcia, and Favianna Rodriguez, the exhibit explores themes of cultural celebration, political resistance, and social justice—from gentrification and gender equality to international solidarity.

18th Annual California Hall of Fame

Debuting May 24 in a freshly redesigned space, the 18th Annual California Hall of Fame exhibit celebrates the first all-women class of Hall of Fame inductees. Explore memorabilia and photos of Julia Child, Tina Turner, Vicki Manalo Draves, Ina Donna Coolbrith, Mitsuye Endo, Dian Fossey, and Alice Piper.


Co-curated with inductee representatives, the exhibit brings inductees’ stories to life in an immersive new space—even featuring some items from their personal collections!

Honor, Recognition & Respect:

48-Star Flag Gifting Ceremony

Saturday, May 17, 2025 | 11 am - 12 pm


Join us for a special 48-Star Flag Gifting Ceremony and pay tribute to the resilience and legacy of Japanese Americans who experienced incarceration. Signed by camp survivors and Nisei veterans, this powerful artifact has traveled across the country and will now join the “Uprooted: An American Story” exhibit.


The ceremony will include a brief video screening, followed by remarks from leaders of the 48-Star Flag Signing Project and camp survivors. Light refreshments provided.

Last month, our members celebrated the life and legacy of California artist Jane Gallatin Powers with a special members-only event at the historic Governor’s Mansion—Jane's childhood home!


Author and artist Erin Lee Gafill, Jane’s great-great-granddaughter, shared stories from her book, "Jane Gallatin Powers: A California Modernist," bringing Jane’s creative spirit to life. Members enjoyed an intimate talk, a book signing, and a tour of the Mansion. Thank you to everyone who joined us in honoring this trailblazing woman artist!
