TRAIN MONTH AT THE LIBRARY
January 2018
 
"Pardon me, sir. Is that the Chattanooga Choo Choo?" The romance of travelling by train and the fascination of watching trains click clacking along the track is for all young-at-heart. Take a nostalgic trip down a miniature memory lane when the Nazareth Area Society of Model Engineers present a model train display for our patrons on Thursdays and Saturdays in January!  The train display will be open to the public on the following dates:
 
 
Thursday, January 11: 5-7:30 pm
Saturday, January 13: 9 - 3:30 pm
Thursday, January 18: 5-7:30 pm
Saturday, January 20: 9-3:30 pm
Thursday, January 25: 5-7:30 pm
Saturday, January 27: 9-3:30 pm
 
For the children, during the week of January 8th all drop-in story times (including the Wednesday evening story time) will have train-themed stories. In addition, a train themed craft night for families is scheduled for Wednesday evening, January 17th from 6:30 pm - 7:15 pm. A sign-up sheet will be located in the children's room.
 
For adults, teens and older children, a presentation on the history of the Belvidere-Delaware Railroad will be given on Saturday afternoon, January 20th at 1:00 pm by Shane Blasae.  Registration is required for this program.
 
January 7th is Library Day at the Nazareth Area Society of Model Engineers from 1pm - 5pm.  Come enjoy 4 operating train layouts of O-scale, S-scale, HO-scale, and N-scale. Located at 212 Main Street, Stockertown, Pa 18083.  Donations are accepted at the door.

Join us on  Friday, January 19th for Family Train Night at the Nazareth Ceramic Center and Nazareth Flag Center.  Families are invited to paint a train-themed ceramic creation from 5pm - 9pm.  This is a free program. Registration is required.  Reserve your spot today at the Main Circulation Desk.

On Saturday, January 27th the Nazareth Area Society of Model Engineers will run Thomas the Train engines at the Nazareth Library from 9:00 - 3:30 pm. Join us for day of Thomas and friends at the Nazareth Library!

FOOD FOR FINES WEEK
 
 Exchange canned goods for library overdue fines Monday, January 8th to Saturday, January 13th at the Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity. Library members will get a $1 credit toward the reduction of fines for each item donated. (Food for Fines does not cover lost/damaged library items or future overdue fines.) The food will be given to the Nazareth Area Food Bank.
 
Bring the items to the circulation desk at the Library. Don't forget to bring your library card! Dented cans, glass containers or expired items will not be accepted. Suggested items include canned chicken, ham or tuna; canned vegetables (baked beans, tomatoes, peas); canned fruit; canned stew or chili; large and small cans of soup; peanut butter; boxed cereal; rice-a-roni. QUELLO CONCERTS

 

On January 9th at 6:00 pm the library will host a program that will introduce our new electronic resource Quello Concerts. Attendees will learn how to use this robust resource during this program.

Qello Concerts is the only place to watch over 1700 of the most amazing live moments in music. It's the world's largest collection of full-length concerts and music documentaries streamed on-demand to just about any digital device. It's like a never-ending concert ticket. This resource is free and can be accessed remotely using a valid library card.

STORY TIME & DROP IN PROGRAM UPDATES
 
Children's Programs will begin their Winter sessions on Monday, January 8th.    
 
Wee Build is a drop in program held on Mondays from 10:30 to noon in the Children's Room. Toddlers and preschoolers are encouraged to create, imagine and share with our diverse collection of building toys. Through play the foundation of mathematical and scientific thinking is built. This program was made possible through the Cruise into Kindergarten program grant from Commonwealth Libraries.
 
Toddler Shake 'n Boogie  is held on Tuesdays from 10:30 to 11:00 in the Library's living room and on Fridays from 10:30 to 11:00
at the Bushkill Firehouse ( 155 Firehouse Drive, Nazareth). It is an active 30 minutes full of movement and music for toddlers and their caregivers to enjoy together.
 
Story times are held at various times to accommodate your schedule.....
 
Evening:
 
A monthly evening story time for children ages 2 to 5 is held on the 2nd Wednesday from 6:30 to 7:00 in the Children's Room. Parents and/or caregivers are requested to participate with their children.
 
Daytime:
 
For the youngest (ages 4 months to 24 months) we have Baby and Me.
It emphasizes nursery rhymes, songs, and the joy of books as well as providing an opportunity for parents, caregivers and babies to socialize. It is held on Wednesdays at 11:15 in the Children's Room at the Library as well as Thursday mornings at 10:00 in the former Lower Nazareth Municipal Building at  306 Butztown Road
 
Read to Me  story time is geared towards toddlers and preschoolers. It emphasizes interactive stories, songs, finger plays and books. It is held in the Children's Room on Tuesdays at 1:00Wednesdays at 10:00 and 10:45, and Thursdays at 10:00 and 10:45.  In addition, Read to Me is offered at the Lower Nazareth location ( 306 Butztown Road ) on Thursdays at 10:45.
 
All story times are 30 minutes in length and do not require pre-registration. Parents and/or caregivers are requested to participate with their children.   
 
  
These programs are part of a PA Forward Initiative promoting Basic Literacy.
YOUNG AUTHORS AND ILLUSTRATORS PROGRAM 
 
Calling all young authors and illustrators!  The annual Young Authors program for children in kindergarten through high school begins Tuesday, January 16th and ends Saturday, March 10th. Write and illustrate your story and get one copy for you and one for the Library collection at the Young Author ceremony during National Library Week. Pick up a copy of the rules at the Children's Desk on January 16th and check-out some of the past entries. This very successful program is sponsored by the Friends of the Memorial Library and Vicinity.
BOOK DISCUSSION GROUPS
The Memorial Library provides meeting space to adult book discussion groups.  All of these groups welcome readers to join for any or all discussions.
 
The Nazareth Book Group will meet on Wednesday, January 10th, 6:30 - 8:00 pm, at the Library to discuss Lost City of the Monkey Godby Douglas Preston. The book discussion group meets the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 pm.  Most discussions are held at the Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity.
