Leading Change Through the Arts!

"Nurturing the Feminine: Veils"

offers activities in March

The exhibition, which opened February 13, is presenting two workshops and a closing ceremony this month.

Sisters Brittany and Devan Mayfield will share their experience with somatic healing, esoteric arts and holistic health with devotees on Saturday, March 7, and Saturday, March 14. Both workshops are from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

The first workshop, "Body as Oracle" on March 7, conducted by artist Brittany Mayfield, is a somatic learning and health workshop to empower the female body. Special attention is focused on attention to breathing and the women awareness cycle.

Body as Oracle is a guided somatic experience designed to help you use your body as your compass. Through intentional movement, breath and reflection, the memories held in the shoulders, breasts, hips and womb--honoring what shaped us while gently releasing what no longer serves--is explored. Participants will learn to trust their intuition, listen to the body’s wisdom, and reconnect with their inner authority. This workshop is an embodied practice of freedom, reverence and ancestral inheritance.

The second workshop "Kinetic Yoga Meditation" is March 14. Herbal tea will be served during this journey through ancestral memory with a one-hour Kemetic (ancient Egyptian) yoga meditation, led by Devan Mayfield.

Bring a yoga mat, a small blanket or shawl for comfort and wear loose, comfortable clothes.

A ceremonial exhibition closing in conjunction with the Spring Equinox will be held Saturday, March 21, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Part 1: March 21, 2026:

“Bear Witness” is held each year during the week of Ann Taylor’s birthday. Ann Taylor was born March 20, 1845. This participatory public art experience is designed to introduce the public to Ann Taylor’s life and journey. Artist Sheila Savannah will guide attendees through the process of creating journals made of found and natural materials. Binding, writing, drawing and imagining dreams on the verge of liberation. Visitors will leave messages of love and goodwill in remembrance to their ancestors at Ann Taylor’s gravesite. Prairie flower planting and walking meditations will be offered, as visitors explore the 26-acre park. A pop-up floral installation will invite attendees to enjoy the beauty of nature and boost their well-being. The Houston Public Library’s (HPL) Gregory School will be onsite to collect the oral histories documenting the lives of African American women and their impact on their descendants that will go into the City of Houston’s official archives.

Thank you to our partners at African American History Research Center at the Gregory School and Houston Parks Department.
