He also established a partnership with Placer County that allows the council to utilize grant funds to support local art programs and artists. AUBURN STATE THEATER - Auburn State Theater, a historic community hub for live entertainment, films and cultural events, was built in 1930 by a San Francisco-based theater management firm. Cost of the original theater was reportedly $100,000. Originally, the theater offered seating for more than 1,300, including seats on a balcony. In the 1970s, the girder supporting the expanded balcony failed resulting in the removal of the balcony. The building was then divided into office and retail spaces and a 500-seat movie theater was carved from the remains of the theater’s original orchestra section. In the late 1990s, Auburn Placer Performing Arts Center was established and the non-profit purchasied the theater 2006. By 2014, the theater had been transformed into a 350-seat performing arts center for the community.
