Dear LA Civil Rights Family,

December is Universal Human Rights Month, and as many prepare for holiday celebrations, LA Civil Rights continues to fight for the human rights, which are inherent to the dignity of every person.

At the LA Civil Rights Department, we serve Angelenos by addressing discrimination and also celebrating our cultures and identities. We created our Civil Rights Enforcement Unit and the "LA For All" anti-hate campaign to ensure our residents have the opportunity to live freely and with dignity. We have 41 Commissioners, who advocate for a better Los Angeles. We also embrace and uplift diversity through our Office of Race and Equity, which leads equity-based programming, including L.A. Participatory Budgeting Program.

As we approach the end of 2023, let us remain dedicated to the vision of a better Los Angeles and create plans to help us get closer to the goal of reducing discrimination in the new year. It is an honor to march with you on this journey toward an LA For All!

Keep the faith and keep the fight,

- Capri Maddox

LA Civil Rights Hosts Civil Rights Roundtable

Last week, LA Civil Rights co-hosted a roundtable with U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California, Martin Estrada. We convened faith leaders as well as local, state, and federal leadership, including the Mayor's Office and the California Civil Rights Department to discuss the rising hate and discrimination against Arab and Muslim residents - as we do for all of communities in Los Angeles. During this conversation, participants not only shared resources, but also discussed how to best support each other and Angelenos in cross-cultural communities. It was an honor to share space with impactful leaders. In the upcoming weeks, we will continue our work to support any community affected by hate and discrimination as well.

The LA Civil Rights Department understands the importance of building bridges for our faith-based community. Since our department was established in 2020, we've connected faith leaders for over a dozen Solidarity Vigils, Unity Prayers, Interfaith Dialogues, and more.

Reparations Advisory Commission Holds Fall Reparations Event

This past Saturday, the Reparations Advisory Commission and LA Civil Rights held its second in-person event, Fall Reparations Event at Charles R. Drew University of Science and Medicine (CDU). More than 100 attendees showed up to learn more about the importance of reparations and provide input on future recommendations to City Council and Mayor Karen Bass of a reparations program.

After hearing opening remarks, the commissioners listened to community members and reviewed the current progress of the reparations efforts followed by an opportunity for attendees to take the "Black Experience Study" survey live in-person, which is open to current and former Angelenos who are over the age of 18.

Thank you to everyone who attended this event and shared your ideas for the City of Los Angeles' first reparations program.

Civil Rights Enforcement Partners with Legal Clinic

Last Wednesday, LA Civil Rights presented at Strategic Actions for a Just Economy (SAJE) on our Civil Rights Enforcement services. The Civil Rights Enforcement Team gave an overview of our discrimination services and details of filing a claim on private sector commerce, education, employment, and housing. After the presentation, our staff listened to the concerns of LA residents regarding housing issues and those who may be facing potential discrimination.

SAJE holds monthly legal clinics for Los Angeles residents to meet with attorneys and ask questions about their case. Together, we can fight discrimination!

CicLAvia - South LA

Yesterday, LA Civil Rights participated in the last CicLAvia event of the 2023! The streets connecting Leimert Park and Historic South Central were opened for the community to enjoy the route.

It was a pleasure watching residents take to the streets on their bikes, skates, and more! We are grateful for all of the attendees who visited our table to receive information on our equity-based services and programs.
