October Features: --->Wahwahtay Benais (Native Hip Hop artist from Minnesota) grew up on the Leech Lake reservation, raised by his mother and deeply influenced by the traditional teachings given to him by his grandparents and other spiritual leaders in the community. He has organized music exhibitions and workshops focusing on youth empowerment and reconnection to traditional Anishinaabe teachings on his reservation, as well as performing on a national level. His work has taken him to many places including Orlando, Albuquerque, Michigan, Maine, Northern California, Washington state, and Kansas. Wahwahtay Benais continues to utilize his artistic expression to promote the advancement of tribal people everywhere. In the Anishinaabe language, the term "Wahwahtay Benais" describes a great thunderbeing that lives within the northern lights. To the Anishinaabeg, the thunderbird is a powerful being who works with the balance of Mother Earth and the northern lights represents the physical dimension where our ancestors live. myspace.com/wahwahtaybenais

Xpress Yourself Spoken Word Workshops for Youth
| |
Recent partners for Cafe Cultura's workshops: Lincoln High School, Southwest Early College, & Grant Beacon Middle School. We are confirming several more as the school year progresses.
If you are interested in having Cafe Cultura present at your school or organization, feel free to contact us. Our basic version is a one time, 1 to 2 hour session. We have used this highly engaging and culturally relevant workshop structure for over seven years to encourage Chicana/o and Native youth to use spoken word to give voice to our stories of love, struggle, injustice, and celebration. They serve to supplement and support Language Arts/English curriculum. Workshop structure was designed by a spoken word artist with 4 years experience teaching at the middle and high school level with contributions from other poets and youth advocates. Click here for a detailed information sheet.
Save the date: October 12th from 11am to 12:30pm at 1029 Santa Fe Dr...Xpress Yourself Spoken Word Workshop w/ Radmilla Cody.
As for our intensive workshops, we are enjoying getting to know the youth at La Academia @ Denver Inner City Parish, College Track, STRIVE Prep SMART, & Denver Center for International Studies (through DPS Indian Education). We look forward to starting with KIPP Denver Collegiate HS this the month.
If you're interested in our workshops, please contact us.

Exciting Updates

Thank you to everyone who attend our 1st Annual Family Day Open Mic. Families had the opportunity to attend a free event and eat together (frequent family dinners are effective tools to help keep kids substance free). Special shout out to everyone who performed during the open mic...and especially to our features, Idris Goodwin and Grupo Tlaloc, for inspiring the crowd with their words and energy. We also appreciate the Victim Offender Reconciliation Program of Denver
for sharing importance of your work in the community. Thank you to Denver RAP (Resource for Awareness and Prevention) for your support in hosting this event. We look forward to making our September open mic a free event with free food...every year!
Below are some photos from the event.
-We are honored to have been selected for the 2013 Mayor's Award for Excellence in Arts & Culture (Youth Arts). For more information, click here.
-Performances/shows from Cafe Cultura Collective members: If you want us to host an open mic featuring our spoken word artists, contact us ASAP. Funds will go to sustaining our organization and the work we do in the community (especially our workshops for youth).
-Feel free to visit our website
often for updates (click on the image).
- We need your help: We're still distributing Cafe Cultura Collective Compilation books to local schools and organizations working with youth (especially to those serving mostly Native & Chican@/Raza youth) free of charge. If you're interested or know of contacts, send us an email ( [email protected]). We'd definitely appreciate it...
