Breathing for Wellness
By Wendy MacPherson of Root and Thrive
We all know that too much stress has a negative impact on our physical, mental and emotional health. Even though self-care is important, especially when we are stressed, adding more things to our schedules can add to our sense of overwhelm.
Breathing is something we already do, all day and night. Breathing well can make a huge difference to our stress levels. We can breathe in specific ways that prompt our nervous system to calm our minds and bodies.
Here’s my favorite simple breath practice to down-regulate the nervous system: On your next breath, allow your belly to expand as you inhale then SLOW DOWN YOUR EXHALE as you exhale through your mouth. You might imagine a candle flame a few inches from your lips, and imagine trying not to disturb the flame. Repeat a few or several breath cycles like this. Even 2-3 of these breaths can have a calming effect. *If you feel dizzy, or find this unpleasant in any way, this is not the right practice for you right now so don’t keep going if this happens!
I don’t wait to feel stressed out, I do this breath practice every time I’m stopped at a red light, and any time I think of it, while I’m doing dishes, pulling my socks on, or before I eat a meal. I find it incredibly helpful to breathe this way when I have a difficult conversation, or feel anxious or stressed or when I’m trying to fall asleep in the middle of the night (thanks, menopause!). I love teaching about the nervous system and supporting women’s wellness with somatic (body-based) practices like this. If you give this a try, I’d love to hear how you find it.
