 A CONVERSATION WITH ANNE BALLANTINE

Dr. Beth: Your 20th anniversary of practicing Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Rhinebeck is coming up in November. This is an exciting milestone! What has been the most rewarding part of practicing in Rhinebeck?

Anne: One of the most incredible experiences about practicing in Rhinebeck for the past twenty years is to have the opportunity to treat the children of patients that I helped years ago. It is a humbling experience to be part of generations of a family. For example, one of my patients whom I met thirteen years ago came to the office seeking Acupuncture to help turn her breech baby. The baby turned, and she delivered a healthy baby girl without complications. Then eleven years later I had the opportunity to treat her daughter, the very same baby now a healthy young girl. It's these types of experiences that make my practice so rewarding.
Dr. Beth:  What drew you to study TCM?

Anne: I started seeing an acupuncturist several years ago while living in LA. She was the person who really introduced me to TCM. I experienced the huge benefits first hand; and from that point on, I knew I wanted to become a TCM practitioner. My father was a physician and my mother was an RN, so I was raised in a household where the field of medicine was discussed often. And when I started to learn about the depth and scope of TCM, it really "clicked" for me as a form of medicine I wanted to practice.

Dr. Beth:  In addition to Acupuncture, you also practice Chinese Herbal Therapy. Is it beneficial to use Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs in combination?

Anne:  The practice of Chinese Herbal Medicine (Chinese Herbology) is a huge part of TCM, along with Acupuncture, Cupping, and Chinese Dietary Practices. I believe that Chinese Herbology works hand in hand with Acupuncture. Often patients wonder what is helping them - the herbs or the acupuncture. It's generally the combination that creates such good results. Of course, Acupuncture is effective on its own as are Chinese Herbs, but in combination you get the healing benefits of each.

Dr. Beth: Do you have any special areas of interest in your practice?

Anne: Having a family practice that treats men, women, and children allows me to help many individuals with a broader scope than specializing in just one area. Women's health, psychological issues such as depression and anxiety, neurological issues such as migraines and neuropathy, and pregnancy and fertility issues are often addressed in my practice, as are issues pertaining to allergies, asthma, Lyme Disease, and general wellness.
