When my daughter walked into the DMV hoping to secure a personalized license plate that read “FLOURISH,” she was told it was unavailable. Without hesitation, she created another version of the word, “FLR-ISH.”
It was a small act of creativity, but one that revealed something much larger about the way Maria approached life.
Where others may have focused on disappointment or limitation, Maria saw possibility. In many ways, that simple license plate became a metaphor for a life lived with resilience and imagination.
Flourishing is often associated with achievement: career success, financial stability or recognition. But real flourishing is rarely linear. Careers change unexpectedly. Health challenges emerge and plans unravel. The people who continue to flourish are the ones who learn how to reinvent themselves through adversity.
That reinvention requires courage. It asks people to focus not only on what has been lost, but on what still remains possible. Maria appeared to understand this deeply. Throughout her life, she continually found ways to reinvent. She approached challenges not as permanent roadblocks, but as invitations to adapt and reimagine what could come next.
