Dear Friends of Assistance League of Inland North County,

Forty years ago, the Sony Discman was invented, Microsoft Windows 1.0 was released, and the Assistance League of Inland North County was born – or, as we were known then, the Assistance League of Escondido Valley. Back then, our founders (one of whom is about to celebrate her 100th birthday!) gathered with other women interested in establishing an Assistance League chapter in north county San Diego. Seventy-nine of the women at that initial meeting became charter members. Today, we have over 150 members and community volunteers who dedicate over 20,000 hours a year to serve our community.

We will celebrate this milestone anniversary with an open house on May 1. If you know us well, come celebrate among friends. If you want to get to know us better, this will be a perfect opportunity to learn about our eight philanthropic programs and tour our world-class thrift shop; details are in the flyer included in this newsletter. Who knows – you may find that you share our passion for giving back to our local community and decide to join our ranks. We welcome you - and are profoundly grateful for your continued generosity and support.

With heartfelt thanks,

Jorgine

Operation School Bell

Operation School Bell® is a transformative program that provides new school clothes and shoes to children who may never have experienced the joy of wearing something new. For these children, receiving a fresh set of clothes isn’t just about a new outfit—it’s about reclaiming their dignity, their self-worth, and their pride. When they put on clothes that fit well and look good, their confidence soars, and they feel empowered to succeed in school and believe in their own potential. Parents see this newfound confidence and are filled with greater hope for their children’s future and success in the community. Your donations help us to bring Operation School Bell to many hundreds of children each year.

In this year’s Spring session, we met an extraordinary dad who is raising four daughters on his own as their mother passed away two years ago.

They are the “joys of his life”, but providing for four children is hugely expensive and he was so grateful: “you have no idea how much this means to me” he said.

A single mom is raising another family of four children. They lost their dad less than a year ago.  The mom came to us to say “thank you” three times for giving her this opportunity for her kids.  Clothing and shoes really help her out, especially the new shoes! It seems the kids grow out of their shoes every few months, and they are so expensive.

This is who we are; this is what we have been doing in our four decades of service to the Inland North County community and WE CANNOT DO IT WITHOUT YOU!

Ready Set Read

One of our lesser known, but deeply impactful programs is Ready, Set, Read! This program ignites a love of reading by providing elementary and preschool students with one-on-one tutoring and support, books as gifts, and visits from children's authors. By fostering a passion for reading and giving children their very own books—often for the first time—this initiative helps build self-confidence and sets them on a path to success in education and beyond. In March, 120 fifth graders attended a presentation from Author Donna Tabone on her book “Earth Falls Asleep”. This book takes the reader on a quiet journey of Nature's change during that short period just before sunset. Each character in the story has a final quest before Earth breathes a sigh and falls asleep. The hush that comes over all living creatures at this time gives way to a peaceful calm that is and should be the goal of a day well-lived!

Many of the students we support face the harsh realities of housing insecurity, a lack of stability at home, and constant chaos that makes it nearly impossible to focus on schoolwork or even find a moment of peace. In response, Ms. Tabone empowered them to take control of their narrative by encouraging them to write and illustrate their own journals—an outlet that provides a constructive and positive way to navigate the challenges of daily life.
